PSA for #AAS2026: the Skytrain is the easiest way back to the airport, but the line forks—you want a train for YVR, not Richmond Brighouse.

I keep coming back to a poem Takane Suzuki presented in the #AAS2026 panel "Beyond the Salaryman: Work + Gender in Postwar + Contemporary Japanese Literature + Fiction."

No, it's not junbungaku—but it's thoughtful and still packs a punch in 2026.

Grateful she granted permission for me to share.

Had a nice day presenting at #AAS2026 on women's reproductive decision-making in Japan. Hard to not enjoy a conference when it's in your own city, and when the views look like this 😱

Fun day at #AAS2026 — I filled in for some missing folks on a panel on Pedagogy under Threat, discussing how to respond to Hindu nationalists, successfully cajole administrators to defend academic freedom, and normalize / use offense in the classroom (seriously, it’s part of my pedagogy). #highered

Used a break in my #AAS2026 conference schedule to explore the Nitobe Memorial Garden at UBC. (Tricky for the cab driver, but he was a trooper.)

The garden is gorgeous—tranquil and lush. So many buds on the trees and deep down things just thrusting out of the earth.

Extremely proud of my former W&M student, now a PhD student at Stanford, Xincheng Hou. He is doing fascinating work on public toilets in Republican China and is creating 3D models in Blender to better understand their spatial logic! #AAS2026

I jumped to another panel at #AAS2026 where #노슬기 is discussing GI underground newspapers during the 1970s. Korean Free Press, and Demand for Freedom (Okinawa) were two of such papers, they may have been primarily written by black GIs. Articles often showed minority solidarity
