JFO’s co-Editors-in-Chief Mark E. Hauber and Rafael Rueda Hernández will be hosting a Meet the Editors event. Pictures show the headshots of Mark Hauber and Rafael Rueda Hernandez, plus the cover of the JFO, featuring birds flying and swimming on a colourful gradient sky.
In this event, you will learn about the journal’s scope, editorial workflow, and tips for successful manuscript submission. The session will include an open discussion on best practices in scientific publishing, from both the author’s and editor’s perspectives, and time for questions. Perfect for first-time authors, students, or anyone interested in learning more about the submission and publishing process.
Rafael will also host a second event, the book presentation of Guía de Identificación de Aves de América del Norte, the Spanish translation of Peter Pyle’s Identification Guide to North American Birds. Picture shows a green book featuring an outline of an extended bird wing, whose title reads "Guia de identificación de aves de América del Norte", Parte 1, Tomo 1, no passeriformes. Peter Pyle.
As editor and translator, Rafael will share insights into the translation process, working with author Peter Pyle, and the importance of high-quality scientific literature in Spanish. The session will also explore future directions and the role of inclusive publishing. Copies will be available for purchase on-site. Tentative schedule for the conference is ready, dates and times of these events to be determined soon!

MOTUS TAGGING: SNOWY PLOVERS ON THE GREAT SALT LAKE This workshop, to take place on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, will provide hands-on experience in the proper application of Motus telemetry tags to shorebirds. Motus tags and bands will be applied to Snowy Plovers (Charadrius nivosus) breeding on South Great Salt Lake. Official logo is ready, inspired in the emblematic Ogden Arch, the Wasatch Mountains (where Ogden is nested) and featuring a Wilson's Phalarope, a numerous species in the Salt Lake.
The event's official art also served as inspiration for the logo (a drawing depicts a wilson's phalarope swimming, with mountains in the background and two lillies). The wonderful pencil drawing was made by AFO councilor Natasza Fontaine, a very talented artist!
AFO will return to the western USA after 15 years. We'll be hosting a conference in Ogden, Utah, between July 29 and August 1, which promises to be one the best in years!
