OSI SAF suspends its Climate product still based on SSMIS (Interim Climate Data Record)
Due to unstable access to #SSMIS data, we are suspending today the distribution of our #SeaIce concentration interim climate data record based on it (OSI-430-a).
We advise all users to switch to our #AMSR2 based climate products.

Northern hemisphere Sea Ice Index values up to 30/07/2025
#SSMIS data-end grows close. Our #SeaIce team has been busy this summer to ensure product continuity.
Our Sea Ice Index will be updated from v2.2 (SSMIS based) to v2.3 ( #AMSR2 based) from Friday 01/08/2025 on.

The developing polynya north of Greenland looks impressive. It will likely open a bit further in the coming days. The sea ice is being pushed away from the coast by the prevailing southerly winds. This area is usually covered with sea ice.

At a remarkably late date, Hudson Bay is now (almost!) covered in #SeaIce:

Amongst the other peripheral seas, extent in the Sea of Okhotsk is also currently lowest for the date in the #AMSR2 record.
Baffin Bay and #JAXA pan #Arctic extent are both 2nd lowest.

It now looks highly likely that the 2024 #Arctic #SeaIce minimum extent will prove to be 4.07 million km² on September 13th, using #JAXA #AMSR2 data:

That is 4th lowest for the date, but the equal 5th lowest daily minimum in the satellite era:
