Tonight I managed to create a gainmap-style (SDR+HDR) #avif using the latest git version of libavif, converting from an UltraJPG (jpg with gainmap) using avifgainmaputil. Conclusion: No browser support! At least high bitdepth #avif is supported by all browsers except #firefox.

I still think #AVIF is the way to go for web-friendly HDR images! FF will eventually catch up.
... It seems that #bluesky converted the attached avif to jpeg, so you won't be able to see the difference.

Seems like you can get a roughly 2% efficiency improvement with 4:2:0 decoder output just with smarter post-processing for chroma. Pretty neat!

A screenshot of "Deer Fork" showing its Images format feature for Thumbnail and Fullsize, in the example it is AVIF and WebP respectively.
In #DeerFork (a fork of deer.social) there is a cool feature related where the user can choose thumbnail and fullsize image format.
From my tests, thumbnails as #AVIF produces smaller filesize while for fullsize it is better as #WebP (smaller filesize).

이미지 해상도나 내용의 복잡도에 따라 다르겠지만 이미지 크기는 png > jpg >>>> webp >> avif 순으로 작아진다.
png가 수 MB 라면, webp는 수백 KB, avif는 수십 KB로 비교할 수 없게 작아지지만 품질의 차이는 거의 없다.

워드프레스 블로그에 avif를 쓰면 속도도 빠르고 좋은데 이를 SNS(ex: 쓰레드, X, Bluesky) 에 올리면 avif 형식의 대표이미지를 보여주지 못한다.
