Come to my talk tomorrow! I will be looking at the bibliometrics of the free energy principle framework: is it a degenerating research programme? #psaatw #philosophyofscience #fep #actinf #friston
The precisions at various levels of the model are indeed dependent on one another, and changes in one influence others - they are not independent generally.

This is by far my favorite paper on Active Inference. A treasure trove.

What that also means is that as the unpredictability of the external environment increases (e.g. level of chaoticity), the agent that wishes to survive must increase the complexity of its generative model, or else it is no longer.

- that a system that models the environment well-enough is following the FE minimization. Here is a non-trivial thought then, therapeutic alliance building is minimizing free energy of the therapist's generative model of the patient.

What he describes here is already a deep-generative model, where we have a policy selection and counterfactuals, we then select a policy (sequence of actions) which minimizes expected FE, which is indeed an expectation of an expectation

in development of an organism the goal-state of morphogenesis itself is less likely to be updated based on prediction errors. In Michael’s work this goal state for a planarian can be set with a bioelectric memory. If it is not set so, the default is determined by a phenotype.
