EIF secures access to N$370m for climate financing Justicia Shipena Namibia can now access up to US$20 million (approximately N$370 million) in international climate finance through the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF). This follows EIF’s accreditation as a National Implementing Entity (NIE) of the Adaptation Fund, which was announced on Wednesday. The decision was made by the Adaptation Fund Board during the intersessional period between its 44th and 45th meetings. It recognises EIF’s compliance with the fund’s fiduciary standards, environmental and social safeguards, and ability to deliver impactful climate adaptation projects. “This accreditation is a testament to EIF’s strong governance and commitment to impactful climate solutions,” said EIF chief executive officer Benedict Libanda. Libanda said the accreditation opens doors to deliver innovative projects that address the real challenges people and ecosystems face. With this accreditation, EIF is now authorised to design and implement country-led climate adaptation initiatives. EIF spokesperson Romeo Muyunda said the focus will be on strengthening climate resilience, especially among vulnerable communities. He said the direct access also reduces reliance on multilateral intermediaries, enabling a more efficient, nationally driven approach. EIF is currently developing a project pipeline aligned with the country’’s development and climate goals. One of the planned initiatives is aimed at improving infrastructure on resettlement farms, ensuring access to water, supporting climate-smart agriculture, and building market linkages. Another planned project focuses on sustainable aquifer management in drought-affected regions. Muyunda said it will include integrated water resource management and support value chains that promote environmental sustainability and economic inclusion. He said these projects are being adjusted to align with Namibia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. EIF will also launch an Adaptation Project Pipeline Development Strategy to guide implementation and engage national stakeholders and international partners in meeting the country’s climate goals. Muyunda noted that as an NIE, EIF will ensure that all supported projects meet strict fiduciary, environmental, and social standards.
