Stars crowned champions  African Stars were crowned Debmarine Namibia Premiership champions for the third year in a row after an entertaining 3-3 draw against Young African on Saturday. It was Stars’ third league title in a row which earned them the winning prize of N$850 000, while they also made a clean sweep of the individual prizes with defender Charles Hambira winning the player of the season award, midfielder Mbakondja Tjahikika the goalscorer of the season award, and goalie Mervin Kasetura the goalkeeper of the year award. Young African received N$420 000 as the runners-up, third-placed Khomas Nampol received N$320 000, fourth-placed FC Ongos received N$230 000, and fifth-placed Mighty Gunners received N$180 000. Teams down to 10th place received financial rewards, while Debmarine’s total prize money amounted to N$2.6 million. Saturday’s match between Stars and Young African was immaterial as Stars had already won the league, but both teams provided a fine spectacle for the die-hard fans who had braved the cold weather. After some early attacks with Eliakim Jackson, Nkwuda Obinna and Denzil Narib all coming close, Narib opened Young African’s account after 15 minutes with a cracking shot from the edge of the box. Barely three minutes later it was 1-1 after a backheel deflection by Rikambura Muundjua caught Young African keeper Moses Makhae wrong-footed, but Young African regained the lead just before half-time when Dynsel Awaseb hit the post from a corner and Narib followed up to slam the rebound into the net. Stars once again drew level seven minutes after the break when the ball went loose from a corner and Deon Tjizumuaje tapped it in at the far post, and they took the lead for the first time when Given Mutuezu slipped in behind Young African’s defence to head in a free kick. Young African, however, struck back through a long-range shot by Romin Berndt to equalise at 3-3, and despite more chances at both ends, the teams held on for a deserved draw. The result saw Stars completing their 30-match campaign with 58 points, after 16 wins, 10 draws, and only four defeats, while they scored 47 goals and conceded 25. Young African finished second, four points behind, while Khomas Nampol came third on 51 points. The bottom three clubs, Cuca Tops, Blue Boys, and Young Brazilians have been relegated, while Blue Birds gained promotion from the Southern Stream First Division to the Debmarine Premiership after drawing their final match 0-0 against crosstown rivals Eleven Arrows. Blue Birds topped the log with 41 points from 20 matches, followed by Eleven Arrows on 40, Try Again (34), Dates and Friends (33 each), Mariental (30), Ramblers (25), Orlando Pirates (22) and Oranjemund (17). Former glamour club Black Africa, however, did not escape the axe, despite beating Ramblers 2-1 in their final match on Saturday to finish second last on 17 points. They will now be relegated to the second division along with Latinos, who finished last on 13 points. The post Stars crowned champions  appeared first on The Namibian.

African Stars make a clean sweep at Premier League awards Erasmus Shalihaxwe African Stars Football Club were crowned Debmarine Namibia Premier League champions on Saturday night.  Their victory was confirmed last week when their closest rivals, Young African Football Club, dropped points against Mighty Gunners in Otjiwarongo.  Stars won the league for the third consecutive year, taking home a trophy, medals, and N$850,000 in prize money. Stars dominated the Debmarine Namibia Premier League awards, with centre-back Charles Hambira named player of the season.  Midfielder Mbakondja Tjahikika received the top goal scorer award after scoring 15 goals during the season, and goalkeeper Mervin Kaseturu won the goalkeeper of the season. Veteran captain Ronald Ketjijere spoke about the tough season. He credited Young African FC for making it a close race for the title.  “Young Africa gave us a tough season; they really gave us a run for our money and gave us sleepless nights. There were times when we thought they were going to drop points, but they kept winning their games and stayed in the race for the title until recently when they dropped points against Mighty Gunners and gave us some breathing space. They were really good this season,” said Ketjijere. Ketjijere, who is considering retirement, said the team’s management is trying to convince him to keep playing.  He has not made a final decision and plans to meet with management in the coming days. Top goal scorer Tjahikika reflected on the team’s success.  “It is becoming boring, winning the league three times in a row… but it is a great feeling, a great honour to represent this great club and its supporters… Okaserandu faithful. I am looking forward to bigger challenges in my career. To be honest, winning the league did not come as a surprise because we just picked up from where we left off last season. Personally, I worked extra hard, and with the coaches also pushing me to aim high,” said Tjahikika.

Three in a row for Stars  African Stars completed another imperious season by winning the Debmarine Namibia Premiership on Sunday.  Their 1-1 draw against Mighty Gunners in Otjiwarongo put them four points clear at the top of the log and although there is still one round of matches remaining, Stars cannot be caught anymore. It was their third successive victory in the Debmarine Namibia Premiership while they have now also won ‘The Double’ along with the NFA Cup for the past two seasons and chairman Salomo Hei said it was an exceptional achievement.  “It’s a very humbling experience because it’s very difficult to win the league, and to do it three times in a row is an extremely strenuous exercise. We are the only country in the world where we still play double-headers, and it shows the physical extremes our players had to endure. To win it three times over such a difficult schedule tells us what a big achievement it is for African Stars and what a special breed of players we have,” he said.  “It’s really a great success, and we will only understand this achievement better in the fullness of time,” he added. Hei also congratulated their Lesotho coach Bob Mafoso, who took over the hot seat midway through the season after the departure of Ronnie Kanalelo and an interim tenure by assistant coach Benni Haoseb. “We really have to give the coach credit and applause. He came here during mid-season from another country to a new league. He had to adapt to Namibian football; he didn’t have any friendly matches and had to start immediately in a difficult league,” he said. “But he also knew there was no window for failure; he found a team at the top of the log and had to sustain that. But he has done very well and taken African Stars a notch up now,” he added. Hei said Stars will once again compete in the African Champions League. “This is our dream – to get to the group stages of the Champions League. We lost out on an away goal last year, and this year we lost out on penalties, so hopefully, it will be third time lucky,” he said. “We hope we can use our local stadiums soon for matches, especially the rugby stadium. If it could be used for the Cosafa u17 Girls Championship, why can’t we use it for our upcoming African preliminary games?” he asked. “We don’t get government support, but we are doing this for the whole of Namibia, so I would like to appeal to sponsors to come on board,” he added. While Stars have now won the league, the bottom three relegated teams have also been determined as Young Brazilians and Blue Boys join Cuca Tops in the drop zone. With one round of matches to go, Young African have also secured second place, but the battle for the rest is still wide open with five teams separated by four points. Here are the complete weekend’s results: Sunday, 1 June: Blue Boys 2-2 Julinho Athletic, Blue Waters 5-1 Cuca Tops, Tigers 0-2 Unam, KK Palace 1-1 Khomas Nampol, E Chula Chula 2-2 Young Brazilians, Mighty Gunners 1-1 African Stars, Okahandja United 0-2 Young African, FC Ongos 2-0 Bucks Buccaneers. Saturday, 31 May: FC Ongos 2-0 Unam, KK Palace 2-2 Young Brazilians, Blue Boys 1-0 Cuca Tops, E Chula Chula 1-1 Khomas Nampol, Mighty Gunners 2-2 Young African, Okahandja United 0-1 African Stars, Blue Waters 1-0 Julinho Athletic, Tigers 2-2 Bucks Buccaneers. African Stars is six points away from the title Erasmus Shalihaxwe African Stars Football Club needs just six points from their last three games to win the Debmarine Premier League title for a third straight season. Stars lead the log with 53 points after 27 matches.  Young African Football Club follows closely with 49 points from the same number of games. This weekend, Stars will play two away games.  On Saturday, they face Okahandja United at Nau-Aub Stadium in Okahandja.  On Sunday, they travel to Otjiwarongo to play the Mighty Gunners.  If Stars win both games, they will secure the title before the final round. If they drop points, the last match of the season could decide the championship. Stars will face Young African at Legare Stadium in Gobabis—Young African’s home ground. Young African will also play two matches this weekend.  They meet Mighty Gunners in Otjiwarongo on Saturday and Okahandja United on Sunday.  If they fail to win both, Stars could be crowned champions earlier. Before his suspension by the Namibia Football Association last week, Young African coach Mali Ngarizemo said, “I will not give up and will fight for the league honours until the last game.” Young Brazilians from Karasburg, Blue Boys from Swakopmund, and Cuca Tops from Rundu have been relegated from the elite league.

African Stars have league title in sight  Six points from their remaining three matches are all that stand between African Stars and a third consecutive Debmarine Namibia Premiership crown. The champions secured maximum points over the weekend to build up a four-point buffer over second-placed Young African, who are on 49 points accrued from 27 matches. Stars beat Ongos and Tigers 2-0 each to continue their march towards securing another league and cup double, with the MTC Maris Cup already in their bulging trophy cabinet. Khomas Nampol and Mighty Gunners in third and fourth positions on 46 points apiece are the only other clubs still in with a mathematical shout of usurping the leaders. However, Nampol and Gunners will need Stars to fail to pick up points in their remaining fixtures while winning their last three each for that to happen. The Gunners are one of Stars opponents this weekend, with mid-table Okahandja United the other. Stars captain Ronald Ketjijere, who has been an integral part of the last six title triumphs, says retaining the title will require single-minded focus. “It’s getting tight at the top, so we can not afford any slip-ups. We came out knowing what we wanted, which is three points today [Sunday],” Ketjirere said following the 2-0 win over Stars courtesy of strikes from Wily Stephanus and the league’s top scorer Mbakondja Tjahikika.“Tigers is one of our hoodoo teams, we’ve struggled to beat Tigers over the years. Today we came with a different mentality.” A similar shift against Okahandja United and Mighty Gunners will guarantee the title. However, Ketjijere cautioned against getting ahead of themselves. “It’s one game at a time, we have to focus on Okahandja United. We need to get the maximum points against them,” the ex-Brave Warriors skipper said. “We know its not going to be easy as each team is now fighting for their own objectives, some want to be top eight and others want to be out of relegation. We want to win the league and we must keep our eye on the ball.” Stars head coach Bob Mafoso expects his charges to rise to the occasion and get over the finish line. “We always try to ignore what other teams are doing. We just want to focus on what we want to do,” Mafoso says. “We’re happy that we’re going into the final two weekends in control of the situation. We’re not chasing, it’s in our hands.” Meanwhile, Blue Boys became the latest club to be relegated from the topflight following another abysmal showing over the weekend. They lost 3-0 to Khomas Nampol on Saturday before going down 2-1 to Young Brazilians, who are next on the chopping block unless they can overhaul 13th place Julinho Athletic. The Brazilians are on 21 points, seven fewer than Julinho, who need only two more points to remain in the top division. Cuca Tops, who were relegated just over a week ago, held KK Palace goalless on Sunday after losing 1-0 at home to Eeshoke Chula Chula the day before. African Stars extend lead Debmarine Premier League log leaders African Stars FC extended their lead to 50 points after defeating FC Ongos at Independence Stadium on Saturday. The match started intensely with both teams looking to take control of the ball searching for the opening goal. It was, however, the league leaders who took the lead after Mbakondja Tjahikika scored through a powerful shot from long range just after 14 minutes. As the match progressed, both teams missed a few chances with Willy Stephanus coming close twice. While Ongos duo Simon Elago and captain Wangu Gome rallied their team with relentless attacks, the first half ended 1-0. The second half began calmly until both teams created a few chances minutes in. African Stars had the habit of shooting from long range with three players attempting shots from outside the box. Despite trailing, Ongos kept pushing, but fast-forward, African Stars star Stephanus scored a wonderful goal after a thunderous shot from long range, sealing a 2-0 victory for Bob Mafoso’s side. In a post-match interview with Nampa, head coach Mafoso expressed delight with his team’s performance after a disappointing result from their last fixture. “Very happy after a horrible weekend last weekend. It’s a weekend we want to forget. I think we came back better,” Mafoso said reflecting on the 2-0 loss against KK Palace. “It’s one of the teams we were able to watch before playing against, so it made things a bit easier in terms of preparations. At least we were preparing against something that we knew. “We had to watch them last week after our loss here,” Mafoso explained. African Stars face Tigers Football Club on Sunday. Other fixtures finished as follows: Bucks Buccaneers 1-1 Mighty Gunners Cuca Tops 0-1 Chula Chula Young Brazilians 1-2 Blue Waters Julinho Athletic 0-0 KK Palace UNAM 2-0 Okahandja United Young African 1-0 Tigers Khomas NamPol 3-0 Blue Boys. – Nampa The post African Stars extend lead appeared first on The Namibian.

Champion Stars host spiky Chula Chula  Debmarine Namibia Premiership leaders African Stars expect a tough clash against the fiercely supported Eeshoke Chula Chula at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium tomorrow, according to head coach Bob Mafoso. He also anticipates a carnival atmosphere between Namibia’s two most supported club sides. The Basotho tactician says his charges need to be in top form to defeat Chula Chula tomorrow – and fellow northerners King Kauluma Palace on Sunday – to continue pushing for a third-consecutive NPFL crown. One of those charges is free-scoring forward Mbakondja Tjahikika, who is enjoying a purple patch following a tweak in position, finding himself closer to goal in the last six matches. Tjahikika, who leads the premiership in goals with 13 strikes in 23 matches, has taken on the goal-scoring baton from veteran attacker and teammate Wily Stephanus who topped the scoring charts for the past two seasons. After netting a hat trick in the 4-1 win against Young Brazilians, he hopes to keep scoring and fire Stars to another title. “The confidence is coming. My target was around 16 goals but with seven games to go, I think I can get to 20,” Mbakondja says of his ambition to maintain his scoring run. Noticing Mbakondja’s eye for goal upon assuming the coaching reigns at Stars in early April, Mafoso encouraged the live wire to get into the opposition penalty box more, which has yielded the desired results. “With Mbakondja as long as he keeps being in that box the chances will come. He got a hat trick because of that. He has missed a few chances but as long as he stays getting in there, he will score,” Mafoso said. The title-chasing Stars are favourites to win their weekend’s matches, with an 11-point buffer over Chula Chula in seventh-place and five more over Palace in eighth. However, Eeshoke Chula Chula have been a thorn in African Stars’ side since gaining promotion to the top-flight two seasons ago, living up to their Oshiwambo name which translates to ‘spiky thorns’. They notably upstaged Stars twice to lift the now defunct eye-opening Dr Hage Geingob Cup. Not only have they denied Stars silverware, but Chula Chula’s supporters tend to dwarf the champions’ sizeable following when the clubs clash. Stars, arguably the best supported club in the land for decades, appear to have found a formula to overcome their Chula Chula hoodoo, having won their last two league meetings. Stars won 2-0 on the road the last time the two sides met in February, when they also defeated KK Palace 2-1. “We have to do it for our fans. It would be nice to see a packed stadium,” said Mafoso, who recalls good-natured teasing that he would lose to Chula Chula upon arrival in Namibia. “We’ll have to push for the points. I think it’s going to be a nice atmosphere where the two teams who are widely supported are going to play against each other. “It’s not going to be easy but we’re going into that game with a bit of a confidence booster having collected six points over the weekend.” Chula Chula and Palace also face second-placed Young African this weekend, with Mighty Gunners in third at home facing the relegation-battling Brazilians tomorrow and Khomas Nampol on Sunday. Ongos, who hold fourth place, will look to revive their fading title aspirations wth victory at bottom side Cuca Tops and Julinho Sporting who hover just above the drop zone. Young Africans aim to seal Debmarine Premiership final match Erasmus Shalihaxwe Young African Football Club owner and coach Mali Ngarizemo says his team will fight for the Debmarine Premiership title until the final day, when they face African Stars Football Club in Gobabis. Ngarizemo spoke over the weekend in Windhoek after Young African beat title contenders Khomas Nampol Football Club 2-1. “We are still in the chase; we want to take it down to the wire, because we are not even done with African Stars yet, and we won’t make it easy for them. Our last game will be against them (African Stars) in Gobabis, and we hope to win the league there. Remember our next four games are at home, and we hope that will help us pick up all the points. It has not been easy playing at home, but we hope that will change in the coming games,” he said. Ngarizemo said the win against Khomas Nampol was tough. His team arrived in Windhoek late the night before after playing the Young Brazilian Football Club in Karasburg.  He said they had little time to rest, while Khomas Nampol had enough time to recover. Young Africans are second on the log with 43 points from 23 games.  African Stars lead with 46 points, also from 23 games.

Stars, Nampol create a gap  African Stars and Khomas Nampol both collected maximum points in the Debmarine Namibia Premiership over the weekend to open up a bit of a gap on the chasing pack.  On Saturday, Stars beat Cuca Tops 3-1 through goals by Jomo Tjiveta, Vitapi Ngaruka and Godwin Eiseb and followed that up with a comprehensive 4-1 win against Julinho Sporting on Sunday, with Mbakondja Tjahikika scoring a brace, and Charles Hambira and Awilo Stephanus one goal each. That put them at the top of the log on 36 points from 19 matches, but Khomas Nampol are just one point behind after they also collected maximum points over the weekend.  On Saturday, Khomas Nampol made a great comeback to beat FC Ongos 3-1. Simon Elago gave Ongos an early lead from a corner, but Nampol struck back with second half goals by Ngunzu Salazar, Matthias Haufiku and Apollo Hangero to get a valuable win.  On Sunday their striker Ngunzu Salazar scored both goals against Tigers, which put them second on the log, just one point behind Stars on 35 points.  Nampol coach Fortune Eichab said their game plan against Tigers worked out perfectly.  “We always play to win, so we came with a plan against Tigers – we played long balls – if you play long balls against Tigers you unsettle the defence and it’s very difficult for them to contain that. Our second goal came as a result of that – out from the keeper into the box. We trained hard for this and I’m just happy for the players and the fans as well – it’s been a while since we picked up six points, but the teams around us are winning so we need to keep on winning,” he said.  The results put them right back in the title race, but Eichab said they are not concentrating on that at the moment.  “The title race is still wide open, anything can still happen, but we are not concentrating on that, we are only concentrating on our upcoming matches. We have crucial games coming up so we need to check on our games, check on our opponents and prepare well,” he said.  “If we just focus on Stars we will be out of the title race, so we will just focus on ourselves and do what is right for us.  If we play the right way we will get results and move in the right direction,” he said.  On Sunday, FC Ongos bounced back with a 1-0 win against Young Brazilians in Keetmanshoop with Simon Elago scoring the winner.  That put them on 33 points, along with Young African, who picked up maximum points after beating Cuca Tops 1-0 and Julinho Sporting 2-0.  Mighty Gunners also moved up to 33 points after collecting four points at home at the Mokati Stadium in Otjiwarongo.  On Saturday they drew 0-0 against Blue Waters, while they beat Blue Boys 3-1 on Sunday, with Stephanus Petrus, Barnand Horaseb and Edwin Axakhoeb scoring their goals while Christiaan Doeseb replied for Blue Boys.  Unam had a successful weekend on the road after drawing 0-0 against KK Palace and beating Eeshoke Chula Chula 2-1, to move up to sixth position on 30 points. Tigers beat Young Brazilians 2-1 on Saturday to move up to seventh on 27 points, with Chula Chula also on 27 after they drew 0-0 against Bucks Buccaneers on Saturday.  In other results, Okahandja United beat Blue Boys 2-0, KK Palace and Bucks Buccaneers drew 0-0, and Blue Waters beat Okahandja United 1-0.  The post Stars, Nampol create a gap  appeared first on The Namibian.

African Stars lose momentum at the top  Defending Debmarine Namibia Premiership champions African Stars’ new coach, Bob Mafaso, says he needs some time to bed-in following a weekend of mixed fortunes. Stars lost ground at the top of the standings after suffering a surprise 2-0 defeat to Unam on Saturday afternoon before atoning for that shock result with a 1-0 win over struggling Bucks Buccaneers the day after. The holders dropped to third and now trail Ongos by a point having started the weekend level on 26 points. Ongos picked up four points to move up to 30, following a goalless draw with Mighty Gunners at home on Sunday and a 3-1 victory over Okahandja United the day before. In an interview on Saturday after their loss at the Unam Stadium, African Stars head coach Bob Mafoso stated that his players gave their all, but Unam was more organised on the day. “I am still trying to get my feet on the ground with the new team, but we had a good game plan, and my players gave it their all,” Mafoso said. “I just hope that in our next game, they will not be in too much of a hurry and try to play our game, as today they were rushing. I am the only new guy here, so the players have an understanding of what is expected to win,” Mafoso noted. He acknowledged that he did not intend to start his African Stars journey with a defeat and hopes to turn things around and ensure the team retains their title. Khomas Nampol moved into second position on the table by virtue of having a better goal-difference after beating Cuca Tops 2-0 away at Rundu, where they also drew 2-2 against Julinho. Young African are fourth, following Sunday’s 1-0 win over Unam and a shock defeat by the same scoreline against Buccaneers on Saturday. It was Young African’s first league defeat of the season and indicative to the slip in form since relinquishing top spot on the standings which they led for the opening nine fixtures. The Gunners complete the top five, after picking up two points on the road. They also played to 1-1 stalemate against Tigers on Friday. In the drop zone, Young Brazilian in 14th spot improved their survival prospects with 1-0 triumph over bottom side Cuca Tops and 1-1 draw with Julinho. Like Tops, Blue Boys continued struggling as they lost both matches over the weekend. They were defeated 2-0 away to Eeshoke Chula Chula on Saturday and 1-0 by King Kauluma Palace the following day. Stars overlook part-time home coaches for top job African Stars executive chairman Salomo Hei says Namibian coaches who were eyeing the club’s head coaching position did not meet a key requirement. Instead, the club opted for Lesotho national Bob Mafoso who was unveiled as substantive head coach of the Debmarine Premiership defending champions. He takes over from Ronnie Kanalelo who resigned at the end of January after just under a year with the team. Hei said local coaches who applied for the job were overlooked on the basis of being part-timers, adding that Mafoso’s profile aligns with the club’s lofty ambition of becoming a force on the continent. “We were looking for a career coach, in the sense that it’s someone who is a full-time coach. Not someone who will have another job from 08h00 to 17h00 and then run to Stars for the training,” Hei told Desert FM this week. “There was interest shown from local coaches but obviously we needed to understand [where] these coaches are in terms of where African Stars FC is going,” stressed Hei. The executive chairman said the process of employing a head coach had been concluded and that Benni Haoseb, who stood in for Kanalelo, had given management time to find a new tactician. “Haoseb steered the ship; I remember that he took charge of the team when we travelled to the north for the Eeshoke Chula Chula and KK Palace encounters where we collected maximum points,” Hei said. Bob Mafoso has been appointed as technical director of African Stars. File photo “Haoseb went on to deliver the inaugural MTC Maris Cup after disposing of Bucks Buccaneers in the semi-final and eventually Young African FC in the final showdown held at the Hage Geingob Rugby stadium.” Haoseb will revert to his assistant coach position. Mafoso inherits arguably the strongest side in Namibia and is expected to see them to a third consecutive league title, which will guarantee CAF Champions League qualification. Stars top the Debmarine Premiership log standings with 26 points at the halfway stage of the season, with FC Ongos second by virtue of an inferior goal-aggregate. Khomas Nampol in third place with 25 points look likely to be the other side challenging for honours. Hei believes Mafoso will justify the club’s decision to recruit him. “We have concluded and we were able to get the work permit for coach Mafoso. He has a Confederation of African Football (CAF) A licence and his résumé speaks volume in terms of what he has accomplished as a coach,” said Hei “Given where we are on the log standing, I think we are on the right track and we hope that coach Mafoso comes in and gives us the necessary impetus that we need to get over the line. “This is what we want as we continue our pursuit of the African champions league,” Hei continued. “We are very specific in terms of our objective, I mean African Stars compete for everything. We would want to have our identity in terms of how we want to grow our football.” Approached to comment on the issue of Stars opting for a foreign coach, seasoned mentor Lucky Shipanga commended the club for the direction they have taken. He said while local coaches have proven to be competent, the domestic football landscape requires that they have more than one income stream to survive. “Even if they have a CAF A licence, the coaches will never survive on the meager salary they get from the clubs that is why they will opt to work from 08h00 to 17h00 and thereafter consider the coaching work,” Shipanga said. “There is one thing you cannot take away from local coaches and that is the passion and the love they have for sport,” he added. Shipanga argued that “some of these clubs do not respect coaches and that most of the time the conversation between a club and coach centers around the aspect of simply ‘helping out’ not a substantive offer”, as clubs rely on sponsorships and grants to sustain operations. African Stars appoint Mafoso as head coach Erasmus Sjalihaxwe African Stars Football Club has appointed Bob Mafoso from Lesotho as its new head coach, following the resignation of former coach Fillemon Ronnie Kanalelo in early February. The club announced the appointment on Monday, stating that Mafoso’s experience aligns with its ambition to secure more victories and win trophies. “African Stars Football Club is thrilled to announce the appointment of Bob Mafoso as our new head coach! A CAF ‘A’ licensed coach with over a decade of experience at the elite level, Mafoso is a proven winner with an impressive track record of league titles, cup victories, and international success,” the club said in a statement. Mafoso’s career includes key roles in Lesotho football. He is currently the head coach of Bantu Football Club, where he won the 2022/23 Lesotho Premier League Championship and the 2023 People’s Cup.  He previously led Lioli FC to the 2022 Alliance Cup and was head coach of Bantu FC from 2019 to 2022, winning the 2019/20 Lesotho Premier League and being named Coach of the Season. Stars win N$1.5 million jackpot  African Stars are N$1.5 million richer after winning the inaugural MTC Maris Cup on Saturday.  Several thousand fans turned up for the match at the Hage Geingob Stadium and Stars didnt disappoint as a first half goal by their talisman Willy Stephanus secured them the victory.  Stars came out attacking creating some chances in the opening minutes but strker Youssouf Ibroihim failed to convert.  Stars however took the lead on 14 minutes when a corner was cleared to Stephanus who unleashed a cracker from theedge of the box that went into the ledft hand cortner of the net.  Stars continued to attack and had several more opportunites in the first half but Stephanus and Abram Tjahikika both failed to hit the target.  Young African came back more determined after the break with Nkwuda Obinna  providing some good crosses from the left wing, while Denzil Narib had a header well saved by Stars keeper Mervin Kasetura and Deacon Kakuenje headed over the bar from close range.  As the match reached the final stages some heavy flying tackles went in and with emotions boiling over, referee Vistoria Shangula had her hands full to try and keep control.  Young African however could not find the equaliser and Stars went in to clinch the trophty and the winner takes all prize of N$1,5 million.  After the match Stephanus said their experience counted in the final.  “It’s a great feeling, winning the first ever Maris Cup and I hope it’s going to be a running trophy. We know Young African is a good team and they would come at us because those boys are hungry, plus the rivalry has been there for the past two or three seasons so it was just our experience that counted today,” he said.  “This trophy means a lot to the players, and it will boost us a lot going forward with our league campaign now. We are currently on top of the league so we’ll just keep on pushing it, and try and go for our third league title,” he added.  Stephanus also thanked Stars’ fans for their support.  “The Starlile faithful always come out in numbers especially here in Windhoek so we have to thank them as players and the way we do that is on the field of play.” Young African defender Dylan Horongo said Stars took their chances and made less mistakes.  “We knew that the team that took their chances was the one that was going to come out victorious. The team that was going to make the least mistakes was the one that was going to win the game, so Stars took their chances early in the game and then they managed the game,” he said.  “Now that the cup is done we’ll just go back to the drawing board and work on correcting our mistakes. We are going to play them again on Tuesday, but it’s fine, they can have the cup, but the league is ours,” he added.  Stars midfielder Abram Tjahikika won the player of the tournament award and their goalkeeper Kasetura the goalkeeper of the tournament award with each player receiving N$20 000.  The post Stars win N$1.5 million jackpot  appeared first on The Namibian.
