UK banks brace for losses on loans to broadband challengers NatWest and Lloyds among lenders exposed as ‘altnets’ buckle under strain of rising costs and fierce fibre competition

It's calculated that the various UK Alt Nets carry over £7bn in debt, meaning that for many, the interest charges for servicing their debt is greater than the revenue they generate. Clearly not a sustainable business model.

Another great article by the ft.com breaking down the current rollout of full fibre to UK homes.
Had there been better coordination we wouldn't have had 21% of UK homes having a choice of fibre provider because of overbuild, whilst 25% of homes have no provider at all.

The split of the UK broadband market in the ft.com graphic reinforces the dominance of BT and Openreach as the key provider. Both Sky and Talk Talk predominantly use Openreach services to deliver their broadband services. Slim pickings for the Alt Nets.

UK broadband availability in 2024: FTTP premises up 23% y-o-y Regular update on fixed broadband availability in the UK tracking progress between end of 2023 and 2024.

At the end of 2024, only 15% of premises did not have access to gigabit capable broadband, thus marking the achievement of the 85% gigabit coverage goal at the UK level.
