Yes and no.
I can see paths from a Leave victory in the referendum that didn't lead to invoking #Article50, but they would have required honesty and courage, two things Westminster is, and was, desperately short of.
So, in that way, it was inevitable, once the referendum result was in.
So stupid.

It was meticulously hidden from voters what the possible outcomes of Brexit was, not the least because the campaign was an unholy alliance of groups with directly conflicting goals, so the only way a unified campaign was possible was by staying away from anything happening after invoking #Article50.

Quitters had no truer stooge than him in their quest for #NationalFailure. They weaponised the Cult of Corbyn. Moreover, he was rabid for immediate #Article50 before ANY Gov't member could be dragged from their hiding places as the UK descended into chaos on 24/06/2016.

The second #Article50 was invoked to leave the EU, we were also out of the CU and SM, and all other treaties. Joining again was against the May red lines, which BJ adopted as his own.
So, the BJ/Frost deal needs to be evaluated not on if it replicated SM/CU membership, which was and is impossible.

Leaving the SM and CU was a given, if we left EU. It's an automatic, unavoidable, consequence of invoking #Article50 to leave EU.
Also, we couldn't start negotiating joining the SM or creating a CU, until we'd invoked #Article50. So, we'd be leaving EU w/o knowing if we'd get back into SM or a CU.

But that's not what went down. The EU stayed at a respectful distance, allowing UK to figure Brexit out on its own.
It only provided information about what the consequences of UK withdrawing from the EU would be, and debunked lies told about it.
It then respected UK invoking #Article50 to leave.

No, EFTA didn't want the UK, so that was a non-starter. EEA, again, would hinge on getting all the EEA30 to agree, which isn't a given.
And could only be negotiated once we'd invoked #Article50 and left the EU and all treaties. So absolutely no guarantees we'd be able to return.

No.
They'd still have had to invoke #Article50 and that would have left the UK outside all treaties. No SM, no CU, and no FoM.
It _might_ have been possible to negotiate us returning to one or more of those, after leaving, but not a sure thing - any MS could have blocked it. So, a leap of faith.

Isn't that what they've been doing, so far? The problem is when such responses don't yield correction in behavior, and the current rules don't offer any guidance on what to try next.
Agree it needs to be dealt with, but w UK leaving, there was #Article50 providing guidance. None for kicking MS out.

🤓 Clarification for those who don't know or can't be arsed to look it up:
A50 #Article50 is the rule members invoke to end their EU membership.
A50 helpfully clarifies that #Article49 is the _only_ path back for a member that has left the EU.

You know the EU doesn't actually have to allow an #Article50 extension unless we can make a really good case about what we're going to do with it, right?
The Labour amendment is meaningless - the EU isn't going to renegotiate a new deal with the current players.
