Interesting paper out today discussing improvements in the point spread function model of @esa.int's Gaia satellite in preparation for Gaia DR4. Every time that I read about this instrument I am blown away by how technical and complicated its data is to process ☄️ #galactic #astromethods
- try Paraview for the 3D representation of multiple clusters (did somebody try it?)
- write several blog posts explaining all the advances
And many other things that I'm learning each and every day.
This is the most exciting project I worked on in my hole career!

- change the distance calculation of objects using long-range distance correction methods (review the distances estimated by Bailer-Jones and others)
- continue with the morphological analysis of clusters, adding parameters >>>

Christmas summary: lower back pain on the first day of the holidays, flu, fever, cough... Even so, I read many articles about open clusters and I have an updated backlog:
- try more membership analysis algorithms (HDBSCAN, UPMASK, GMM) and compare with @emily.space results >>>

Spot the difference (no prizes, easy one!😂).
This is what I've been trying to solve the last few days. Two issues, all good and working now.
I've broken a few old tests in the process of creating the new output, so a bit of clean up, but this is good progress.

New SkyCalPro Release🔭
"Phases and Orbital Data" Calcs:
-Full Moon/ Phase times now shows the local observers time
-The first Full Moon after the Autumn Equinox now displays as "Harvest Moon"
-Supermoon/Micromoon will now align with other astronomy publications

Version 2.4.0 of skycalpro.com now released😊This is a small update adding to the seasons option: equilux, aphelion, perihelion and earliest/ latest sunrise/sunset times for your location-you may be surprised that these are not the same dates as the solstice! 🔭
#Astronomy #AstroMethods
SkyCalPro Mini Update:
Equilux (days when daylight and darkness are closest to equal) added to Solar Events.
Earliest and latest sunrise/sunset search added for a given location and date range.
Apsides (Perihelion, Aphelion - earths closest and furthest approach to the sun)

Just testing the next release of skycalpro. This update will extend the output of one of the options. Will launch later in the week.
Dev working. I haven't tried staging it yet, but I think this one will go up easily. More soon...

SkyCalPro 2.2.0 out now:
-Jupiter GRS position & drift rate now reliably updated monthly
-Full ref dates, drift, current longitude & observation window in output
-Sun/Moon diameter now shows on ISS transits

After a lot of faffing this week, early this morning, I managed to stage the changes to the GRS calculation on SkyCalPro. That's a big step.
When i get time this week I'll mock it up in production and see if it goes up there too. Hopefully ready publicly in the next couple of days

Just spinning up the staging server. Been working on the Jupiter Great Red Spot drift rate automation and its now ready for the next stage of testing.
Cool image of the GRS from Voyager. I'll tell you more about it next week

Given that this is just about *replicating* papers - not even doing something novel - it's worth remembering that, despite all of the marketing and hype, we are a very very long way away from AI tools autonomously conducting novel research. 🔭☄️ #astromethods
Interesting #astromethods paper came out recently that looks at whether or not large language models can replicate astrophysics papers.
The answer: No. 🔭☄️
They had a ~20% replication score, even with quite a lot of help. And this was just replicating papers - not doing anything new...

After my last membership analysis of M37, I wonder if DBSCAN is also a good choice for other clusters with different distances and ages. I'll run the Jupyter Notebook with other clusters and publish the results #Astromethods #Astronomy

I hope that this week I can finish the code for analyzing membership in open clusters using three different methods (DBSCAN, HDBSCAN, and GMM). I'll write a post on ExploreGaiaData.com with the conclusions and comparisons with previous studies of M37.

This will be a long path, lot of things still pending to read and learn, but I can't imagine nothing more exciting. Your comments or suggestions are more than welcome.

In this 2nd post I started to process data from Gaia DR3 to generate my first membership analysis, using M37 as an example. I'm using DBSCAN just for start the process, in following days I'll read scientific papers to learn more about membership analysis.

Paper day!
You're doing ground-based high-resolution exoplanet transmission spectroscopy and want to analyse the planet—not the star or Earth's atmosphere.
Is there a way to disentangle your spectrum *without* destroying the planet signal?
