This Week, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away: ‘The Force Awakens’ Turns 10, ‘Starfighter’ Wraps, and More Happy Sunday, and welcome to a new edition of “This Week, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away“. The year is coming to an end, and so is production on _Star Wars: Starfighter_. Director Shawn Levy confirmed this week that cameras have stopped rolling, as I anticipated last week they would. Ironically, the announcement came on the day _The Force Awakens_ turned 10. That’s already two _Star Wars_ movies in post-production at this point, on top of _Ahsoka_ Season 2. The question now is: What will film next? I went to see _Avatar: Fire & Ash_ today, but I didn’t get any _Mandalorian and Grogu_ footage. However, it looks like some of you will! Reports (and terrible-quality recordings) coming from the multiplexes point to a redux of the trailer that dropped in September with new footage. (Click here if you wanna hear more details.) It seems like studios are engaging in a new trend — drop surprise new promos in theaters instead of online. I got to see, however, the teaser for _Avengers: Doomsday_ , as well as a one-minute teaser for _The Odyssey_ (different from what ran earlier this year, and also not the six-minute preview that played in the States). As far as _The Mandalorian and Grogu_ goes, we’ll have to wait a few weeks for the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, here at Star Wars News Net, we did have a Character Spotlight on Bail Organa, as well as a new episode of _SWNN Live!_ focused on one of our topics tonight: the 10-year anniversary of _The Force Awakens_. In the lawsuit, filed in the UK a year ago, the company claimed that they had signed a deal with Peter Cushing in 1993 that gave them the right to resurrect the actor’s likeness first by way of visual effects. The judge ruled that “it is impossible to identify anything at all that belonged to Tyburn which can be said to have been transferred” * _I swear it’s happening…_ Daisy Ridley insisted a few days ago that the New Jedi Order movie is still happening, despite the fact that we haven’t had any updates on it since February. “We are moving in a great direction,” she said the day of the 10-year anniversary of _The Force Awakens_. * _Publishing updates_ : We have two new comic reviews this week, for _Jedi Knights #10_ (by Nate) and _Han Solo: Hunt for the Falcon #4_ (by Colin). * * * ## 10 Years Ago, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away: The Force Awakens Looking back 10 years in time to that December weekend of 2015, I think that the main feeling that comes to mind is hope. It’s a very _Star Wars_ answer, but the reason why I liked the title of the film as much as I do is that it truly captured how the Force was awakening once again in the world. It was a feeling of optimism. We just got a great _Star Wars_ experience in theaters, featuring characters we love, but most importantly to me as a 17-year-old, new characters that were just as engaging and worthy of the franchise. The future was looking bright. We had two more main saga movies in the works, and I was sure that some of those spin-offs Lucasfilm was working on would be interesting enough. It’s been 10 years, but it’s felt like 100 years. And now, after a years-long detour into streaming, Disney and Lucasfilm are finally (and this time for real) ready to go back to the multiplexes. The cinema was packed this afternoon with families going to see _Avatar_ , and I couldn’t help but think of how fun it’d be to go see a big movie I was genuinely passionate about. (_Fire & Ash_ was very good, though.) There was a time when this weekend was supposed to be _New Jedi Order_ weekend. Not only was _Star Wars_ moved from this window, but _The Mandalorian and Grogu_ stepped in as well. As I look back at what that weekend taught me, today I’m also choosing to be optimistic. 2026 will be an important year for _Star Wars_. It will have to define the film strategy post-_Star Wars: Starfighter_ , the streaming strategy after _The Mandalorian_ and _Ahsoka_ , and name a new head of Lucasfilm, among other things. We’ll go over many of those in the New Year, but the bottom line for me today is this: I’m choosing to be optimistic, just like _The Force Awakens_ taught me. There are many talented people in this industry capable of delivering a great theatrical experience in _Star Wars_ , and as a fandom, we should encourage them to do so, rather than push them away from it. Let’s be clear, though: that doesn’t mean being overly positive or not critical. We should expect high things from our creators, because that’s what _Star Wars_ deserves as a brand. John Williams Shares Memories of Making “Rey’s Theme” In a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette In celebration of _Star Wars: The Force Awakens’_ 10th anniversary this year, StarWars.com has shared a special featurette celebrating and looking at the making of “Rey’s Theme.” John Williams, the composer behind the track, cited the piece as part of the reason why he kept coming back to work on the series. Williams said that he had to think first before committing to making the score for _Star Wars: The Last Jedi._ What brought him back, he said in a 2016 concert, was his special connection to “Rey’s Theme” > “Disney asked me if I would do the next episode of __Star Wars.__ I thought I wanted to think about it for a minute, but then I made up my mind – because I didn’t want anybody else writing music for Rey.” Much like many fans, Williams stated that he felt an immediate connection to the character. Part of that is because of his warmth towards Daisy Ridley. But he also points to Rey’s isolation as being part of the reason why he loves the character and the theme so much, once telling the _Los Angeles Times_ : > “I fell in love immediately with Daisy Ridley. She is just a superstar born. [The theme] suggests a female adventurer, but with great strength. She’s a fighter, she’s infused with the Force, and it needed to be something that was strong but thoughtful.” “This is a girl who’s been a scavenger, she’s been alone and without her parents. I felt a lot of empathy,” said Williams, who even gifted Daisy Ridley the original copy of the sheet music for “Rey’s Theme.” Williams isn’t the only one in love with the character and her theme. C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels cited the piece as his favorite _Star Wars_ music track of all time, as stated in an issue of Star Wars Insider: > “[The theme] absolutely captures Rey’s youthfulness. And then of course it develops into a much deeper orchestral thing that takes us part way through her story. I absolutely love it.” Daisy Ridley will be making a return to _Star Wars_ and the character of Rey in a new movie, given the nickname “New Jedi Order.” It was announced back in 2023 with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to direct. ‘Spaceballs 2’ Enters Production, Shares First Cast Photo Spoofing ‘The Force Awakens’ _Spaceballs 2_ has officially gone into production! Amazon MGM has shared the first cast photo for the 2027 sequel, which stays on brand with a spoof on a particular _Star Wars_ film that also once rang in a new era. The announcement confirms the return of Mel Brooks as Yogurt and President Skroob, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, and Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa. Lewis Pullman, Josh Gad, and Keke Palmer are also joining the cast as new characters. Additionally, Anthony Carrigan (_Superman_) has been cast alongside the return of George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz. A first look at the cast comes via a table read, paying homage to how we were introduced to the cast of _The Force Awakens_ more than a decade ago. John Boyega Claims “It Would Be Mad” If He Produced The Sequel Trilogy _Star Wars_ actor John Boyega (Finn) has never been shy about voicing his displeasure regarding the sequel trilogy (_The_ _Force Awakens_ , _The_ _Last Jedi_ and _The_ _Rise of Skywalker_). Specifically, how it treated his character and other non-white characters. In his latest comments, Boyega weighed in on the legacy character treatments as well as how the new characters were handled in the films. Popverse reports Boyega was speaking at Florida Supercon: > “If I was a producer on Star Wars from the beginning, you would have had a whole completely different thing.” Responding to audience questions, Boyega continued: > “It would be mad. First of all, we’re not getting rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people. We’re not doing that. The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton.” Boyega was referring to the deaths of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker which, especially in the case of Luke, were met with very mixed reactions from audiences. He then expanded on his thoughts regarding the new characters Rey, Poe and Finn. > “Our new characters will not be OP’d [overpowered] in these movies. They won’t just grab stuff and know what to do with it. No. You’ve got to struggle like every other character in this franchise. I’d do that.” Overall, Boyega feels the storytelling could have been much stronger in the sequel films. He suggests writers and producers could have tapped existing sources when developing the stories and characters: > “I’d look to the _Old Republic_ stories and see what we can add to the continuation of that. I would definitely want to see _Force Unleashed_ stories in there. I would try to expand the _Star Wars_ universe as much as possible while respecting the lore. If we’re expanding the lore, we have to do it in within the respective boundaries that stay true. > > “But Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock. Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those characters way more.” In the past, Boyega had strongly criticized the films and Disney for their treatment of his character Finn. Boyega always felt that Finn was Force sensitive and that they should have developed that thread in _The Last Jedi_ and/or _The_ _Rise of Skywalker_. He’s also accused the studio of not knowing how to handle non-white characters, specifically Finn and Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico. He was quoted as saying: > “What I would say to Disney is do not market a black character as important and then push them to the side. It’s not good”. He said that Disney “knew what to do with Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, but they didn’t know what to do with me or Kelly Marie Tran”.
