BA.3.2 may well be on the road to dominance in France 🇫🇷.

The rise in BA.3.2 frequency is accompanied by a decline in XFG* frequency, as expected.

Following BA.3.2 in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. No signals from Central or South America yet.

Are there any public wastewater dashboards or monitoring pages covering Central or South America? Links would be very helpful.

Closely following BA.3.2 here. It is still unclear what trajectory it will take.

If BA.3.2 fades out - are there any obvious candidates that could challenge NB.1.8.1 and XFG in the near term?

New sequences from Northern Ireland 🇬🇧: BA.3.2* is now dominant.

~65% of sequences are BA.3.2*, with a corresponding decline of the previously dominant XFG lineage.

So far, this increase does not appear to be associated with a COVID-19 wave across age groups.

16 new BA.3.2* sequences from Ireland 🇮🇪 were submitted today, and 100% are BA.3.2*. Only "2026" is provided as collection date. Not sure why. Interesting, however: All samples are from donors of the 0-18 age group. #BA32

Correction: Newly released sequences from Northern Ireland 🇬🇧 indicate that the frequency of BA.3.2* remains high. This is noteworthy in light of recent posts by @gwladwr on X showing that BA.3.2* frequently targets children and that there is an uptick in COVID-19 cases among children. #BA32

52 new sequences from Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪 - only one is BA.3.2*. The November/December wave appears to be broken. The key question now: will the variant persist at low levels or fade out completely?

Still doubting BA.3.2’s ability to dominate (I have)? It’s already at ~80% frequency in Norway 🇳🇴. #BA32

And is this decrease not observed in the UK because the variant has already spread more widely across the population? #BA32

@Gwladwr and @_CatintheHat report on X that COVID incidence among young children has recently been rising in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Interestingly, this coincides with a marked increase in BA.3.2* frequency.
Coincidence? 🤔

BA.3.2 frequency in New South Wales shows no clear trend reversal. The rise toward dominance observed in December has not continued. However, BA.3.2* remains present at relatively high levels, suggesting ongoing circulation without full displacement of other lineages.

3/3 Does the absence of clear displacement in settings such as South Africa support the possibility of sustained co-circulation rather than rapid competitive replacement?

/6 Next months will tell. In particular, we need to know whether the variant has a reduced capacity to cause disease.
