@_LucyWright you absolute star! Thank you so much for thinking of me and sending restorative goodies to help revive me after #BOU2021. It really brought a lump to my throat. Sending you a big virtual hug 🤗 x

19 #BOU2021 #Sesh6 In summary, here's some personal reflections which I hope shed light on the arcane art of securing government support for restoration, to stop what may have happened to slender-billed curlews from happening to spoon-billed sandpipers or any other birds. The End

18 #BOU2021 Final tip, 7: Treasure your connections with people! Success in bird populatin restoration depends on them. You never know where & when people you’ve met will pop up & become key allies.
Anything I've achieved has been "with [more than] a little help from my friends"

17 #BOU2021 In 2019 China secured #WorldHeritage status for the world's top staging site for spoon-billed sandpiper & other waders. Hopefully South Korea's most important SbS site will be inscribed this year & China will nominate 14 Phase II sites in 2022...

In 2018 China's Yancheng nominated 1st two (eventually incl. Tiaozini, helped by sat tagging data eg of @GlobalFlyway) of 16 Yellow Sea coast #WorldHeritage sites & via a State Council Circular China banned further coastal wetland reclamation http://bit.ly/3f5Kfpl

15 #BOU2021 But instead of destroying Tiaozini, staging site for half world's #SpoonbilledSandpipers, China began to nominate it as serial #WorldHeritage site in 2017, & with @IUCNAsia, N Korea & S Korea set up a #YellowSea #CoastalWetlands Working Group http://bit.ly/3f8QWHu

14 #BOU2021 S Korea hosted #IUCN2012 on Yellow Sea coast. @IUCN produced a situation analysis on EAAF coastal wetlands https://bit.ly/3tIqloo & govs agreed via Resolution 28 to conserve them.
But new top #SpoonbilledSandpiper stopover at Jiangsu Tiaozini about to be reclaimed.

13 #BOU2021 In 2009 #SpoonbilledSandpipers being monitored, breeding site being conserved, there was work to end shorebird trapping at wintering sites & do captive breeding & headstarting http://www.saving-spoon-billed-sandpiper.com But folk said impossible to stop loss of Yellow...

12 #BOU2021 In 2006 the Spoon-billed Sandpiper's main Yellow Sea stopover in S Korea was destroyed causing a crash in many shorebird populations. @BonnConvention adopted a #SpoonbilledSandpiper action plan http://bit.ly/3sflvi5 & @EAAFP set up an SBS Task Force to implement it.

11 #BOU2021 Progress in saving Spoon-billed Sandpipers from brink of extinction (c200 prs in 2008), involving many difft govts, organisations & people, illustrates the power of a compelling conservation objective. Still Critically Endangered but rate of decline probably >halved.

Tip 6: when we all focus on our contribution to the conservation objective, eg achieving a species population target or minimising a specific threat, action for birds works best. Motivations will differ but keeping eyes on the prize avoids bogging down in turf wars.

9 #BOU2021 Tip 5: Govs must be held to account. National courts are 1 way. Treaty compliance mechanisms (eg @BonnConvention http://bit.ly/3tLyxUV are accessible to civil society & can help resolve conflict where 1 gov is threatening birds shared by many govs #StopTagusAirport

8 #BOU2021 Tip 4: Governmnt sluggish in actioning its international commitments to bird restoration? Give evidence of what works for birds (& eg how much Carbon it would store, flood risk⬇️, livelihoods & wellbeing⬆️) & encourage them to scale up implementation for birds & people

7 #BOU2021 Tip 3: #MigratoryBird restoration requires collaboration by all - govts contributing at all levels, driven by engaged electorate - to turn evidence into conservation action. End fragmentation between disciplines, between organisations & in scale. End myopia in silos!

6 #BOU2021 Tip 2: Call on govts to turn fine words at global level into birds at local level! If they implemented all actions they agreed to via eg @BonnConvention, supporting each other via specific coordinated groups, #EcologicalConnectivity & #MigratoryBirds would be restored.

5 #BOU2021 Here’s 7 tips on engaging governments in bird conservation esp. by using international agreements.
Tip 1: To get best deal for #MigratoryBirds funnel knowledge, incl. via @BirdLife_Policy, into intergovernmental decisions at regular treaty meetings. Next up #AEWAMOP8..

4 #BOU2021 #MyPerspective 3) Flyway policy: championing concerted, cooperative intergovernmental conservation action esp. via @BonnConvention @unep_aewa @EAAFP.
Soft law, mainly via environment ministries.
Clever national reps use treaty decisions to strengthen national action.

3 #BOU2021 #MyPerspective 2) In 2008 as chair of @BonnConvention Slender-billed Curlew WG I led a major search for it, failing to prove it's not 1st W. Palearctic bird extinction since Great Auk (1844). http://bit.ly/3tGYrJq http://slenderbilledcurlew.net Can’t let any more disappear!

2 #BOU2021 #MyPerspectives are from 1) 40 yrs in bird conservation: research>policy, government>NGO & local>global. Mostly #MigratoryBirds, from 1992 @RSPBNews, from 2008 as @BirdLife_News Global Flyways Programme policy lead, channelling expertise into intergovernmentl decisions

1 The need to discuss restoration shows failure to prevent bird declines. To capitalise on research shared at #BOU2021 #Sesh6 we must scale up action eg by embedding findings in government policy. Some thoughts on how better to engage governments via intergovernmental processes..

That was fun! All went smoothly from the audience view (🤞🏼) but with some changes to Zoom Webinar since the last time @TriinKaasiku and I hosted an event last autumn, it was a little like wrestling a wee 🐖 covered in baby oil at times. Some tweaks tmrw before day 2 of #BOU2021!

With thanks to @RyanABurrell for all his hard work in preparing for BOU2021. And a big shout out to @monika_reiss and @Nina_OHanlon who will be overseeing the #BOU2021 Twitter Conference over the next three days.

We’re less than 2 hrs out from the start of #BOU2021 and one half of BOU2021 HQ is all ready to go (other half is @TriinKaasiku). These parallel events mean multiple devices! Only the four for me today as well as a good #oldschool paper printout of the schedule 😉 Enjoy!
