A talk title slide that reads: "Designing for nature doesn't cost the Earth". The talk is to be given by Dr Jacinta Humphrey from ICON Science at RMIT University. The image on the title slide shows a stylised render of a small urban park - the sun is shining down on a diversity of native grasses and understorey plants. In the background, you can see a person walking along a walking path, as well as suburban rooftops and large canopy trees (likely eucalypts). The image is a beautiful mix of oranges and greens. The ESA 2025 logo sits in the top right-hand corner.

I’m thrilled to be here on #KaurnaCountry in #Adelaide to attend #ESA2025! I’m presenting in the #NaturePositive Cities session at 11.30am on Wed. Come along to hear about how much it’s going to cost to implement #BSUD actions in our rapidly growing suburbs 🏘️ @ecolsocaus.bsky.social

How the first BSUD principle (maintain and introduce habitat) might play out for 4 taxa in the ACT

Mel Snape from ACT Gov talks about her experience applying #BSUD to #urban planning: can we do strategic conservation planning in cities??

Great to see specific species being the focus, as actions really vary across different taxa!

A garden bed all in Walyalup (Fremantle) that has a dark brown metal sculpture set in the top designed to hold water in a small hollow. The wall is infront of a large Moreton Bay fig tree, the trunk and lower foliage visible in the background of the image. The sculpture includes to casts of frogs that seem to be approaching the small pool of water. Before the photo was taken, a willy wagtail was drinking and bathing in the water.

People think that providing for nature in cities is hard, but it can be as simple as making a hollow in the top of a wall that fills with rain or sprinkler water:
✅bee drinks station
✅bird bath

Large old trees are vital for Australian birds. Their long branches and hollows can’t be replaced by saplings We scanned the tree canopy with lasers and found birds much prefer the branches of big old trees.

You don't need to tell the ecologists this, but it's great that other disciplines are advocating for our arboreal elders!

These grand beauties are valuable for so many species, including humans - we need to protect them at all costs.
