Over a decade after its release from ESA’s Mars Express, the Beagle-2 lander was identified in images taken by the high-resolution camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The lander is seen partially deployed on the surface, showing that the entry, descent and landing sequence worked and it did indeed successfully land on Mars on Christmas Day 2003.

#OTD 16 January 2015, the #Beagle2 lander was found on #Mars. Seen in images taken by #NASA’s MRO, the lander was partially deployed, meaning that it did indeed land successfully on Mars on Christmas Day 2003! 🧪🔭

European (#ESA) #Mars probe #Beagle2 stopped responding on #ThisDayInHistory in 2003, just prior to its landing. An #exobiology mission, it was cleverly named for the ship that took #CharlesDarwin on his long scientific exploration. This Beagle, alas, touched down too forcefully.

A stunning mosaic of over 100 Viking 1 orbiter images of Mars, taken in 1980. The image simulates the view from an approaching spacecraft at a distance of 2,000 kilometers, showcasing the planet's surface details, including craters and varied terrain. In December 2003-January 2004, several robotic missions from Japan, Europe, and the US were planned to arrive at Mars to study its atmosphere and search for water, highlighting humanity's ongoing fascination with the Red Planet. Exceptional views of Mars will be visible from Earthbound telescopes in August and September.

The bright spot on the left side of this image is the back side of Beagle 2, slowly drifting away from Mars Express. This image, taken at 9:33 CET, 19 Dec 2003 (about 1 min after separation), shows the lander when it was about 20 m from Mars Express

#OTD 19 December 2003, #ESA's #MarsExpress released the #Beagle2 lander that it had been carrying since launch on 2 June 2003. Beagle 2 was sent on its journey to the surface of Mars, where it was expected to land early on 25 December 🧑‍🎄

That’s an impressive set! Sadly i only have one space tree bauble, but i put it up every year to remind me of the UK #Beagle2 that now sits covered in dust on Mars - “the dog that did but no one heard”…

Bit of a squeeeee moment as I remember that this time last year I was talking to Dr. Pillinger as I helped her to put together the life sized model of Beagle2 for an evening event at the Royal Academy. @royalsociety #Beagle2
