#birdoftheday is this Black-tailed Godwit on the River Deben at Melton, demonstrating that odd-looking ability some long-billed #birds have for #rhynchokinesis; flexing of the mandible.

Long legs, lethal footwork. Secretary birds sprint down prey and deliver rapid, pinpoint stomps that can neutralise a venomous snake in seconds. Speed, accuracy, and just enough distance to avoid a bite.

Turnstones at high tide

Turnstones at high tide

Plenty of winter plumage #turnstones to be seen along the tide line of the coast - resting at high tide or scurrying around turning over seaweed or stones in search of food. They can turnover their body weight ~120g.

I’ve chosen mostly #gardenbirds in bizarre attitudes. The Robin is a particular favourite! 🪶❤️

GREAT SUN SPOT - I know this Great Crested Flycatcher looks like it’s in distress however it’s actually sunbathing. Mouth open to cool off while in high heat. Many birds reduce parasites on their bodies like feather lice by baking them on hot surfaces. #nature #birdbehaviour #funnyandfunctional

Did you know?
Parrot parents create a unique call for their young, a vocal signature their offspring learns and responds to for life. Just one of many ways animals form lasting bonds.

Are They Aware? — Reflections on Corvid Consciousness In a recent piece, I reflected on how difficult it still is for many to accept that animals might play not only to practice survival…

Are corvids conscious? A new paper breaks it down into five dimensions—and I reflect on what I’ve seen in the birds I live with and watch in the wild.

High fliers: pleasure-seeking parrots are using aromatic plants, stinky ants and alcohol Norfolk Island green parrots are self-medicating with pepper tree bark and leaves, to rid themselves of parasites. But is there more to it? Birds are known to indulge in alcohol and take stimulants.

Ok. There is going to be a series of reactive skypes/skeets regarding this article from @aunz.theconversation.com and "high flier" #birds, because this is dashed interesting to this #OldBird! #ecology #BirdBehaviour #Environment #Parrots #Stimulants #SelfCare

Regarding the panicked behaviour of some birds during total solar eclipses.

If you're a bird flying, and a shadow suddenly falls on you from above, it *could* be a bird of prey seeking to eat you.

So you might take evasive action to avoid being eaten. . .
