Loved this book, Bernard!! Great character development and so suspenseful! I enjoyed the interweave of psychology and forensics. I’m sad it’s over! Maybe there will be a sequel with these characters?!!! ❤️ @bdoucette.bsky.social

I'm currently reading "How Music Works" by David Byrne. It's inspiring me to think about different facets of music that I haven't considered before.

Reading a few pages a day of The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. The goal is to provide a vocabulary for the "forgotten corners of the human condition” like Vemödalen: the frustration of taking a photo of something amazing, only to realize it's a generic, common image. #BlueBrewBooks

I took away 1/2 star, probably because I wasn't wild about the ending, even though I can see why the story ended as it did. The author manages to flesh out each character's persona, past and present, in a way that makes all of their actions and how it all ends understandable. He also brings us back to the 1960's in a matter of fact way, without overexplanation of the ways and thoughts of the time. I would be interested to hear the thoughts of readers who did not live through the 60's. 4.5/5 ⭐️s

This week, I read The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller. This was on the Booker Prize shortlist for 2025. It takes place over a few weeks in the winter of '62/'63 in rural England and is an intense character/marriage study.
Well developed and written, I give it 4.5/5 ⭐️s.

Reading this now and it’s a delight, the coming together of two grown women who have lived alone for many years and decide to join, with their cats, to make a family. Not as lovers or roommates, but as cohabitants. Another idea to consider in this lonely world.

For #BlueBrewBooks and #Booksky here’s something I picked up from the library this week that is in my TBR stack. Excited to read Val McDermid’s take on MacBeth!

Good morning, Susan! I wish they’d leave the time change alone. A cup of your delicious #BlueBrew ☕️ would be great while I’m reading ‘Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter’ by Heather Fawcett. I recommend it for #BlueBrewBooks 👍🏼 📚
I hope you have a wonderful day ☀️

If you have read any of Naill Williams’ novels, you know that he is a wonderfully lyrical writer who sprinkles his storytelling with the spiritual and the mystical. “As It Is In Heaven” is no exception. This 300-page novel is the story of a couple of unlikely lovers— Stephen Griffin, a quietly shy, 32-year-old history teacher who has spent his life growing up in Ireland lost in books, and Gabriella Castoldi, a beautiful, temperamental and talented classical violinist who has chosen to expiate herself from her native Venice to live in a mountain village on the western coast of Ireland. Their views of the world and their interaction with each other is shaped by the two vastly different fathers who raised them — one a loving, giving father who is physically present in the first half of the novel and the other a selfish, angry, unloving father who presence is known only through Gabriella’s troubled memories. Like Williams’ “This Is Happiness,” this is a story about loss, grief, hope and healing.

I finished reading “As It Is In Heaven,” by Irish writer Niall Williams, this past week. Very very enjoyable book. See my mini review in ALT. #BlueBrewBooks #Reading #Books #NiallWilliams #IrishWriters

Good morning Susan. Sunny here. I’m off to the hammock to continue reading “Nonesuch” by Francis Spuford. I’m really enjoying it. Witty, intelligent, and although it’s set with a background of WWII - it’s not a war story. Nor is it depressing. Wishing you a peaceful Sunday. #bluebrewbooks

Reminded this week of one of my favorite books. The story of Luca Turin who was fascinated by perfume and the sense of smell. Happy ☕️ and happy reading to all. #BlueBrewBooks

Two paperbacks, side by side on an oak table in front of coffee cups and orange juice. The one on the left is The Women of Troy by Pat Barker and the blue cover is illustrated by five women in long gowns beneath the famous wooden horse.
The second book is Mary Beard’s Pompeii: The Life of a Roman Town. It has an orange cover with the words Pompeii in gold and a Peacock perched on the second P. At the bottom of the book the colour is broken by a black band carrying an illustration of a fresco, showing cupids, taken from the ruined city.

Me, urgently 😀. Good morning, Susan! Have a great day. I just finished "A hymn to life" by Gisèle Pelicot #BlueBrewBooks. Hard stuff, but nevertheless so full of strength and resilience it is a great inspiration, especially on Women's day 🌹.

Hello, I've never been...what are we talking about on #StunDay #BlueBrewBooks

As I write this on Saturday night, I have just finished this book, and I am pretty blown away. I now admit I should not have read this in a week. I should have read it as more of a meditation. It contains many extraordinary passages I should have lingered over much longer. But it had been highly recommended by several good friends, and I was curious, so I charged through.

I must admit it wasn’t the book for me, though it is a nearly flawless work.

This is a book that starts out with a missing cat and goes on to plumb the darkest depths of the Japanese-Russian conflicts of WWII. It dances through the highs and lows of a marriage, and up and down the alleys of realities. I appreciated the quality of the writing, but as with the one other Murakami book I’d read (“Norwegian Wood”), I found it all to be a bit removed from feeling and passion. I am prepared to believe that is my own culture gap with the author’s style.

“The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle” has become a classic in literature. I’ll be looking at it more over this next week as I decompress from this reading.

An image of a book titled, Blood Moon Over Betonville, by author Bernard Doucette. The cover depicts a small town in the base of tree lined hills. The town is lit red by the glow of a large red moon. Within the moon is a haunting image with horns, fangs and glowing red eyes.

Writers and Lovers, by Lily King, is set in and around Boston, which was fun since I'm from the area. Casey is a thirty something single female writer working as a waitress. She is navigating the recent death of her mother, dating, being broke, and generally figuring out adulting. I found her funny, engaging, and likable. I give it 4/5 ⭐️s.

I read another Lily King novel. Her writing is good, fun, and easy to read, so she's a good cleanser between more complicated writing and easily accessible through my online library (free!)
