Welcoming in the #newyear with quite a splash

I also kept coming back to #BlueHealth, and to Dublin, a city shaped by water, yet strangely disconnected from it.
Happy Sunday ☀️
New Substack out on #BlueHealth and the role of urban #BlueSpaces.
Dublin’s waterways hold enormous potential to support health and wellbeing for all.
What’s missing? Political will, vision, and ambition.
Make your voice heard!
The people of Dublin deserve a world class lido!

Even if politics is not your thing, the interview with Graham Platner (an oysterman running for the US senate) is one of the best I’ve heard when it comes to the healing powers of the ocean.

💧 Last weekend’s #LiffeySwim should act as a reminder of what we are missing in Dublin.
While cities across Europe are reclaiming their #BlueSpaces for swimming, we continue to treat ours like an open sewer.
It’s time to imagine, no demand, a swimmable Dublin. 🌊

One of our favorite conversations this past week:
Some people don’t need studies to know water heals. But for those who do? The science is catching up. 🧠🌊
We took a look at “Blue Health” and “Blue Mind.”
Catch up here: 👇
#OceanHoptimism #BlueHealth #MentalHealth
We said it this morning, but it’s worth repeating:
Protecting the ocean also means protecting each other. 🧠🌊
Mental health isn’t a bonus round. It’s core to conservation.
Let’s keep the #BlueMind & #BlueHealth convo going.
#OceanHoptimism #HopeInAction
But. Some caution flags:
🔹 Many studies are correlational
🔹 Sample sizes are small
🔹 Effects vary by context: wild coast ≠ urban fountain
🔹 Some claims get ahead of the data
We love hope. But we need measured, evidence-based hope.

There is a growing evidence base. Exposure to “blue space” (oceans, rivers, coasts) is linked to reduced anxiety, better mood, even improved sleep.
Therapeutic surf programs? Ocean walks? Shown to help with PTSD, depression, and addiction.

This is the level of ambition we need for Ireland's waterways.

his is what a healthier, greener, more sustainable and people-friendly Dublin could look like.
This is a liveable Dublin.

The Grand Canal Docks and Liffey could be so much more—spaces for people, nature, and sustainable transport.
This area has huge potential, but it's mostly wasted.
Time for change!
#ReimagineDublin #ActiveTravel #BlueHealth
Why don’t we have a similar level of ambition for Dublin?
#ReimagineDublin #BlueHealth
Our ocean, our health.
Polluted seas and dying marine life don’t just hurt nature, they harm us.
We need strong, standalone legislation for Marine Protected Areas. No watered-down laws. No backtracking.
See our letter to Minister Christopher O’Sullivan below.

A swim with a view of the Eiffel Tower 😍
This is the level of ambition we need in Dublin. Swimming in Dublin's canals and the Liffey shouldn't be a risky activity, but something that's safe, comfortable, and easily accessible for all!

A square social media graphic featuring a photograph of a peaceful river surrounded by lush green forest. The border is dark teal with a dotted gold pattern. Logos for UWE Bristol and Festival of Nature 2025 are in the top right, and a circle in the top left reads “The Bristol Distinguished Address Series.”

Could saunas help clean Ireland’s waterways and make us healthier? #BlueHealth #Saunas
Could we use saunas to clean up our blue spaces and improve public health? 🌊
We think so!

I challenge the Irish government, local councils, and Waterways Ireland to clean up our waterways so that one day, healthcare workers across Ireland can prescribe a sauna and a dip, not pills.

My piece on what #BlueHealth could look like in Dublin.
Ever wondered why #swimming in #openwaters makes you feel so good? 🌊🏊♂️ New research from the #BlueHealth project, using data from 1,200 swimmers across 19 countries, found that swimming in natural waters is linked to significantly higher levels of #wellbeing compared to swimming in open-air pools.
