Democratic Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains earlier this year launched her bid to run against Valadao. Following the release of the proposed maps, KCRA 3 asked her spokesman if her vote on the new maps could be a conflict of interest. In response, Bains sent a statement indicating the redistricting plan is not something she will support. “The Texas redistricting scheme is an affront to democracy. Their gerrymandered maps are an electoral fraud. I will not sit by and watch two political parties destroy the concept of fair elections,” Bains said. “This has become a race to the bottom where an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind. We don't need more ways for politicians to rig the system. I oppose any effort to circumvent independent redistricting, and the courts should act to stop these political games."

McGuire’s counterpart in the State Assembly, Speaker Robert Rivas, could also angle for a job promotion with this week’s vote. Throughout this year and prior to the redistricting effort, several sources at the state capitol have told KCRA 3 that Rivas has been considering a run for Congress in District 18, a safe Democratic seat currently held by Rep. Zoe Lofgren. Multiple Democratic sources have told KCRA 3 he intends to run if she retires. Maps for District 18 show the district mostly stayed intact, clutching most of the Democratic voters that perhaps could have been used in other, more vulnerable districts when the maps were redrawn over the last couple of weeks.
A new report from @zavalaa.bsky.social at @kcranews.bsky.social suggests that Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas has his eyes on #CA18, noting that the district "mostly stayed intact, clutching most of the Democratic voters that perhaps could have been used in other, more vulnerable districts" like #CA22

Some Dems would make big sacrifices, seeing their districts get redder in service of the larger plan. These include (but are not limited to!) Jared Huffman, Robert Garcia & Doris Matsui.
On the other hand, Zoe Lofgren ought to be giving blue turf to #CA22, but her #CA18 is untouched. Unclear why.
