Film #16: Charade is full of excellent flirtatious banter, sick (hep)burns, beauty shots of France, and fashion. This is a romantic screwball comedy mystery film that is hilarious from its very first scene and does not disappoint from that moment forwards. Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant have great chemistry together.

Film #15: Broadcast News was a frustrating film for me. The writing was a lot of fun. It was a lot of good one-liners. It had a good commentary on news vs. entertainment, and nearly 40 years later, we can see that the warnings in this film were largely ignored with our current round-the-clock sensationalised news cycle. That said, the romantic chemistry was almost entirely non-existent and the relationship between Jane and Tom made no sense, and I felt offended on Jane’s behalf for pursuing a relationship with Tom, for whom she had zero respect. Just WHY.

Film #14: 12 Angry Men rightfully deserves its status as one of the greatest films ever made. Don’t be fooled by the ostensible simplicity of its set; the single-room set enhances the dialogue that unravels the myriad prejudices and ambivalence that feeds into the judicial system, nearly 80 years after this film was made. Particularly interesting is that this film was released during the McCarthy era, and likely was directly addressing the fear-mongered knee-jerk reaction to anyone who sounded suspicious on the surface being a guilty party.

Film #13: Notorious is a unique spy film. It focuses on drama, intrigue, and suspense (classic Hitchcock) with almost no violence of any kid. One of the most fascinating plot points discusses that women should be puritanical, unless the US government needs them to sell their bodies to progress an agenda. For a 1946 film, at the height of pro-American patriotism, it is critical of the morally grey methods used in the name of American glory. This film is full of depth. Worth a watch. Have a drink with Alicia.

Film #12: McCabe and Mrs. Miller is an anti-Western that’s a commentary on the inaccessibility of the American Dream, solitude when surrounded by others, and the downfall of the machismo. McCabe’s blustering town dominance is quickly and easily outmanoeuvred by Mrs. Miller when her business acumen runs circles around his abilities, and together they find success in their enterprise. However, their success is fractured when the Big Men come to town, and no one is there to save them.

A Fish Called Wanda. Film #11: Although technically not a Criterion film, it was on the Channel, so I’m counting it. A Fish Called Wanda was the most I’ve laughed in a movie in a long time. The improv dialogue was incredible, and the cast looked like they were genuinely having a ball. Every scene with Kevin Kline shone. I’ve rarely seen a film incorporate American-style humour with dry British humour together and it slapped.

Film #10: Ghost World portrays the depths of teenage girl ennui upon graduating from high school and having zero idea what to do with your life because you have zero idea how your life remotely fits into the world. Protagonist Enid accidentally befriends Steve Buscemi, who is 25 years her senior, experiments with different fashion as part of self-discovery, and is caustic and judgmental. A very unique coming-of-age story.

Film #9: I did not enjoy this. I found the lack of soundtrack replaced all the ambient noise of human movement sensorily oppressive. I also found the main characters dull and tiresome, and their pondering felt self-indulgent. The deliberately framed, long shots made it feel like the characters were wandering through a museum of wreckage, but it simply could not hold my interest.

Film #8: Tótem is a family portrait during those moments of chaos and mundanity of preparing for a party. Sincerely filmed, it has the feel of a home video -- sentimental and authentic, where the children behave like children, and the adults’ personalities shine through. As time passes during the day, daughter Sol slowly realizes that the events of the day are not simply a birthday party for her father, but also a goodbye party. Well worth the watch.
