On role of Black writers in current moment:
@deeshaphilyaw.bsky.social: Calls forward Baldwin (“Artists are here to disturb the peace") , Morrison (“This is precisely the time when artists go to work") & Toni Cade Bambara (Work of the cultural worker "is to make revolution irresistible”)

On writing re: our experience as Black people in America, Kiese says if you’ve been abused or betrayed he feels free to speak on that. As I say about harmful situations, a couple of which I write about in the forthcoming “When Trees Testify”— “If you don’t want me to tell it, don’t do it”

Kiese Laymon revisits his thoughts on revision (reformedjournal.com/2022/09/12/k...). Laymon describes his mother as his first teacher on revision and then revisits professorial insights shared with him about Toni Morrison revising. Revision is critical, he says, to his writing process.

Who is your audience?:
Kiese Laymon: The Black dead (including his grandmother) & the Black alive who honor the Black dead
@deeshaphilyaw.bsky.social: Self as first audience, Black Southern women and girls
Whether fiction or nonfiction, the question is are you telling a good story?
#CleInk25
On writing as a Black Southern writer:
Kiese: The South has a conundrum of Black folks who feel a need to hide their true complex nature to survive the world
@deeshaphilyaw.bsky.social: Don’t play small because of worry; celebrate that Black people “are a people who contain multitudes”

I had a FANTASTIC time, overall, at Literary Cleveland's Inkubator Writing Conference.
But what made it stand out, especially in a time when so many bookish events have been...chaotic?

I have so many notes from publishing and genre presentations...!
People have been kind and welcoming, all the best of both Cleveland community and the writing community 🫶
