Sometimes the sheer dread of "Oh god, 😱 someone else had my exact research idea" yields to "Oh cool! We had the same idea but actually saw it very differently and it's interesting to compare notes." ... 🙌🍎 to Anna Bloodworth & co at UGA, totally on my #iteachmath #CSK8 wavelength. 👇

@neilrickus.bsky.social appreciation post!
He was one of the very, very good ones in the computing education world. He was insightful, kind, and wonderfully excitable when he got a good idea in mind. Just found out that he had been ill, and he passed during the summer. 🤓🥹❤️‍🩹 #TeamCompSci #CSK8

Looking at CSTA and AI4K12's report on AI learning priorities.

I nitpick AI stuff, but the abuse of "reasoning" here is kinda like, really bad for a doc about learning AI. I feel it misrepresents important details of AI, & over-anthropomorphizes.

I had a "bonus student" in my CS6 class today (prospective student shadowing for a day). I have to wonder what kids from other schools think of my class. Controlled chaos of kids, computers, cardboard, wire, foil & hot glue. Energetic but engaged, even on a Friday afternoon in May! #CSK8 #EDUsky

It’s a luxury to have an electronics store in my neck of the woods that stocks #raspberrypi and #microbit all the time, and i can just waltz in and buy. Tx, Abra! 🤓

Polypad – The Mathematical Playground Unleash your creativity with the world’s best virtual manipulatives!

Oooooh! Has anyone played with polypad.amplify.com and lasercut the designs? Designs output to SVG and pull into Glowforge well. Thinking 3D nets, tangrams, polyominos, etc. Could be cool for student projects or classroom manipulatives. #CSK8 #Edtech #EDUsky

btw, the app I'm building is a really simple writing game, meant to help teach how LLMs work. I'm sure you've played something like it before. I hope it'll get the teaching gears turning. Curious? DM and i'll share in return for feedback. 🤓🫶 #aiedu #csk8 #teamCompSci

Week 2 into the tri with my 6th grade CS, and they know the workflow. We have group activity, a partner discussion/activity, then hands-on, followed by an exit ticket, often with a product linked. I reply in Google Classroom after class. They respond with the sweetest notes! #csk8 #edusky

My favorite unit of the year has begun 👏🏻 & this year’s 7th graders are making loads of progress in just a few days!
So far Ss learned how to connect motors, methods for forward & backward, and how to connect to a chassis. Can’t wait to see what this group comes up with!

My CS6 students have been using #Microbits, #Makecode, Makecode Arcade, and meowbits for several years. This is my first term with a legally blind student (some vision). Suggestions for keeping her engaged and providing an equitable experience when the platforms aren't super-accessible? #CSK8

I'd suspected this on my Pinterest feed for a while. We know issues with social media not reflecting reality (curated perfection), but now the images aren't just filtered, many are total AI. Tagged for CS Ethics discussions with students. #AIEdu #CSK8

Teachable Machine with 6th grade was a ton of fun today, but I'm pretty sure some minds were blown, too. What's included in the dataset matters - sample size, variety. Lighting matters. The priorities of the person curating matter. Machines aren't biased, but humans are. #CSK8 #EduSky #GoogleEDU

Teachable Machine Train a computer to recognize your own images, sounds, & poses. A fast, easy way to create machine learning models for your sites, apps, and more – no expertise or coding required.

Wanted my students to get how AI can have bias, so we're training our own (sort of) with Teachable Machine. Ex:My model knows the difference between me with and without glasses, but it doesn't work for someone with darker skin or long hair. #EduSky #CSK8 #GoogleEDU teachablemachine.withgoogle.com

Loving #MLforKids in 6th grade this week, as Ss learn more about how AI & machine learning work. Ss experimented w/training the computer to recognize faces in Scratch while creating either their own “filters” or “face locks”.

11/n Shortcuts

Now you can start to 'reveal' the magic hacks/shortcuts. Call one sub from within another. Use a returned value as an argument for a different sub. Calling from a print or as part of a calculation. Let them create from solid foundations

10/n Functions with parameters

Data going in and out of the sub program. Now we can make our calculator useful. I teach to get user input in the main then send the arguments to the subs, which do the calc and return the answer into a variable in the main.

9/n - Functions with no parameters

Next, return values. Hard coded calculations that return the value back to the main program. I teach to ALWAYS assign the return value to a variable (one thing per line) for use in the main program. No parameters yet.

Now introduce data going IN to the sub program. Still super simple examples here (adding two numbers etc).
