I posit that he happened in large part because #MoscowMitch opened the doors. From McConnell's 8 years of disrespect towards Obama to corrupting SCOTUS to ensuring #CitizensUnited became law to protecting potus from impeachment. And he has had plenty of help from a compliant press back home.
