Compared to previous studies, our methodology takes a bottom-up approach, analysing the projected growth of low-carbon technologies and addressing the limitations of other approaches by isolating the specific impact potential of Al within individual sectors.
Furthermore, we estimate the potential increase in emissions due to AI applications (i.e., increasing demand for computing power drives data-centres energy consumption), finding that the emissions reductions due to Al from just these three sectors alone would more than offset the estimated increase in emissions from all of Al's activities (i.e., not just those from Al's contribution to the climate transition). Therefore, we show how the case for using Al for the climate transition is not only strong but imperative.on equitably and sustainably.
