Today would have been Stive Ditko's 98th birthday, Stephen John Ditko was born on November 2nd 1927 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He was inspired by comic strips at a young age, particularly Batman and The Spirit. After a stint in the army Ditko moved to New York to study under his idol, Batman artist Jerry Robinson, at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School in 1950. He soon found work at Charlton Comics producing science fiction, horror and mystery stories, as well as co-creating Captain Atom. He eventually moved to Atlas comics, the company would eventually become known as Marvel. Ditko would become synonymous with some of Marvel's biggest creations like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Ditko retired from mainstream comics in 1998 after almost 50 years in the industry. He was inducted into the comics industry's Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2024, Ditko was named a Disney Legend for his contributions to Publishing.
