The long bridge known as the Confederation Bridge, or Fixed Link stretches across a body of water known as the Northumberland Strait, between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Canada, with large rocks in the foreground. The sky is overcast, casting a muted light over the scene.
If you are headed to Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, for centuries you only had one option...boat. But since 1997, you have another option, and that is the engineering marvel known as the Confederation Bridge.
Opened for use in 1997, the Confederation Bridge, or Fixed Link fulfilled a promise made to the residents of Prince Edward Island that one day they would be joined to the rest of Canada by a permanent connection.
The bridge is an engineering feat, and is the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered water. Built to last for 100 years, at a cost of $1 billion,it is a multi-span concrete box girder design, with high arches built near the center of the 7 mile crossing, so that large ships may pass safely beneath.
It is considered one of the engineering marvels of the 20th century
