Consumers Energy Starts $182 Million Four Cities Metro Pipeline Project
Consumers Energy has initiated construction on the Four Cities Metro Pipeline project, a significant undertaking affecting Oakland and Macomb counties. This $182 million initiative aims to replace and modernize the natural gas pipeline infrastructure serving the communities of Royal Oak, Clawson, Madison Heights, and Warren. Work commenced earlier this year at four key intersections within the metropolitan area, and the plan involves installing eight miles of new 24-inch pipeline over the next several years, with completion targeted for 2029. The existing pipeline, originally installed in the 1950s, is being updated to enhance safety and reliability. According to Holly Bowers, Consumers Energy’s vice president of natural gas engineering and supply, the project demonstrates the company’s dedication to consistently providing natural gas services for homes and businesses. This modernization is essential for ensuring continuous, dependable service now and in the years to come. Consumers Energy proactively notifies customers before work begins in their neighborhoods. Chris Fultz, vice president of natural gas operations, emphasized the company’s commitment to serving over 750,000 homes and businesses in Oakland and Macomb counties with safe, affordable, and reliable natural gas. They acknowledge the potential disruption and are working to address customer questions and concerns. Consumers Energy currently provides natural gas and/or electricity to approximately 6.8 million of Michigan’s 10 million residents.
