As good as the danes are at arranging festivals (and they truly are great at it) they are at charging for hotel rooms. Yikes. It quickly goes expensive when booking for 1 person.

'Speed metal?‘ asked a skeptical Mille Petrozza with the inherent arrogance of youth about the early '80s attempts to speed up metal. 'Halt mein Weissbeer’, he continued, formed KREATOR, put nuclear fire under the boilers & the rest is history. The group from Essen quickly became one of the most influential bands of the thrash wave, not just in Germany, but in general. When the wave of the early 90s turned into pathetic splashes, a long series of years of excursions into all sorts of other genres began, but after the slightly controversial Endorama in 1999, Kreator fortunately returned irrevocably to the thrash where they have always belonged. Throughout the years, Mille Petrozza has been the group's driving force, and I was curious to see if he could still pull the load.

There was no doubt that the powerhouse performance Exodus delivered 23 hours earlier at Pandæmonium had set the bar incredibly high, and now Mille & Co. just had to deliver at the same level. And sure enough, they did from the very first minute. The Germans thrashed it out with “Violent revolution”, which offered plenty of fire and brimstone, not just musically. Before song number two, "Enemy of God", was even launched, Mille ordered the first wall of death of the evening. The band was ready and tuned up, and the audience responded. In fact, there was so much noise in the pit, and it generated so much dust, that at times it was impossible to see Mille & Co. up on the otherwise beautifully decorated stage.

heavymetal.dk recap translation part 2:

"Hail to the Hordes" showed that Kreator is far from being just about sizzle, but that they also contain plenty of catchiness. During “Betrayer”, unfortunately the only song Mille brought us from the masterpiece Extreme Aggression, the pit took a short break, which gave rise to a lot of crowd surfing instead. And if anyone had any doubts, “Hate Uber Alles” proved that German is the coolest language to hate in. In the midst of all this glory, it suddenly struck me how cool Mille Petrozza still is. He plays guitar like a dream and has plenty of hair and voice left. I should say that neither of these things are taken for granted at our age.

The older I've gotten, the more I've gravitated towards the small festival stages that often deliver the intimate but big experiences. However, I have to admit that during this concert I realized that I have actually missed the big events with lots of pyro and, excuse the expression, folk party. On that front, Kreator also delivered in full. It's a mystery to me that the small and extreme band that captured me in 1985 with their debut Endless Pain has been able to grow so big and actually embrace so many people. Because there were a lot of people around me who were barely born when it was released. But together we sang along to the mighty “Phantom Antichrist” from 2012, which proved that it's not just the very old material that works.

Before it was over, the boss revealed that there is indeed a new Kreator album on the way. So let's hope that all the energy and energy the band showed this evening has carried over to the studio. After five fifteen-minute bursts of energy and to the tune of the classic “Pleasure To Kill”, it was over. What a show, what a triumph and what an immense joy to experience the old heroes of thrash for the second night in a row delivering at this insane level!

If Copenhell were to give an award to the band that tries the hardest to get their audience on board, it should go to Kreator. It's almost comical to see how the now aging Mille Petrozza screams at her audience to start a party on the asphalt of Refshaleøen.

POV International recap translation:

Especially on Friday, when the thunderous triumvirate of English Carcass, Danish/Swedish/American King Diamond and German Kreator collectively took the devil by the scruff of the neck and swept the dusty festival site with most of the so-called competitors.

Now, 39 years after King Diamond's debut under his own name with the album Fatal Portrait, the king and the band that bears his (artist) name have made it a habit rather than a coincidence to deliver classic metal in pure showcase style - no question about it.

And so it was at Copenhell. Of course it was, and that's all there is to write about it.

With the caveat that I couldn't get around the festival as much as I would have liked (and that I opted out of Saturday), this year's festival experience was German thrash veterans Kreator.

It wasn't exactly a surprise either.

Ten years ago, Kreator played not only the best concert in the history of Copenhagenhell, but also one of the best festival shows I've ever been lucky enough to experience.

Maybe Kreator didn't quite get there on Friday, but once again you were knocked to your knees and then blown away by the frontal assault of intensity, superior playing and regular whipping energy that is the Kreator experience.

I don't think I know of any other bands I can say that about, but four decades after their debut, Kreator are not only still going strong - they're better than ever!

MetalTone recap translation:

As some may have noticed, I'm a sucker for good thrash - and good thrash is exactly what Kreator stands for - so when they were announced for this year's Copenhell, that's when the biggest tick on the must-see list was made. I've seen Kreator live several times now - and they always deliver - so it was with some anticipation that I found myself in front of Helviti this Friday afternoon.

The stage was wrapped in a curtain with a big Kreator logo - but once the intro melody in the form of “Run To The Hills” from Iron Maiden rang out, the curtain fell and Kreator took the stage - and then it was a thrash party at sky-high level from the first verse - and this was received with lots of joy and hands in the air from the numerous audience who had taken a seat in the sun in front of Helviti. The stage design was as we expected it to be, with devils and hanged people - but even without such a stage design, well, Kreator would have done just fine.

With a spot at a festival, it's important to bring the greatest hits - and not obscure experimental setlists - and Kreator followed this motto to the letter - and then you could argue that “cheating” was used - because does Kreator really have anything that couldn't be labeled greatest hits? I guess not...

Devilution recap translation part 1:

Kreator delivered a concert we've seen so many times before. And the joy of the reunion was again fantastic in the company of the convincing Germans.

We watch them again and again, year after year, because we know what we're getting. And it's the revisiting of good art we know that gives it the status of a classic.

Transfer this to the world of music and take Kreator's recent concert at this year's Copenhell, and you have an exemplary example of a classic in the world of metal.

Kreator's creator, frontman and guitarist Mille Petrozza, is no Hans Gruber. On the contrary, he is one of the most sympathetic figures in the four-decade history of heavy metal. The German was just a big kid when he formed his famous thrash band in the early 1980s. He knows nothing else and has lived off Kreator's music his entire adult life.

It's undeniable that very few people in the world manage to create the economy and framework for their life since their teenage years, but Petrozza did it. And at Copenhell, the 57-year-old Petrozza once again emphasized why, like the Christmas season with the many movie classics, we keep revisiting Kreator even though we know what we're getting.

We only had to get to the second cut of the setlist, ‘Enemy of God’ before Petrozza commanded the first wall of death.

Devilution recap translation part 2:

The audience obeyed. And then the wildness unfolded non-stop for the rest of the concert's 70 minutes. The dust was constantly swirling in both throats and beer in front of Helviti from the tons of people banging into each other in mosh pits, wall of deaths and a constant stream of bodies surfing over people's heads.

Kreator has visited Denmark countless times. This concert was their third visit to Copenhell. And despite there being nothing new about the German rebroadcast, the audience loves the show because the content is entertaining and extremely professionally delivered with all the clichés that work when served with a convincing format. Controlling the show so convincingly came remarkably naturally to Petrozza. Standing in the sun, he didn't even have so much as a bead of sweat on his brow.

The quartet simply made it look so easy. But it's not easy - it's the result of four decades at the top of the thrash world. And the music told its own story about why the Germans are among the elite.

When we reached sublime bangers like ‘Hate Über Alles’ and ‘666 - World Divided’ after twenty minutes, we got nothing less than a cornucopia of cool riffs and tight interplay for the rest of the show.

All the classics we know so well on the setlist. Especially the closing trinity ‘Satan is Real’ over ‘Flag of Hate’ to ‘Pleasure to Kill’ triumphed as always and knocked the guests completely soft in front of the stage.

Kreator know their shit.

'Speed metal?‘ asked a skeptical Mille Petrozza with the inherent arrogance of youth about the early 1980s attempts to speed up metal. 'Halt mein Weissbeer’, he continued, formed KREATOR, put nuclear fire under the boilers, and the rest is history.

MetalTome recap translation:

You know the feeling: every year when we hit December and we're glued to the screen watching ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Home Alone’ among so many other movie classics that are re-released during the Christmas season.

#Copenhell

Concert at Copenhell with King Diamond. To the right of the scene is a huge painting of a wolf.

King Diamond. Bedre end husket.
