The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) Renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou has sworn vengeance upon the rare shark that devoured a member of his crew. In addition to his regular team, he is joined on his boat by Ned, a man who believes…

#CriterionChallenge 11 was to pick something from the list I'm going to link in the next post. This led me to one of the few #WesAnderson films I had never seen, the magnificently bonkers Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. You either love him or you don't; I do.

Blow Out (1981) While recording sound effects for a slasher flick, Jack Terry stumbles upon a real-life horror: a car careening off a bridge and into a river. Jack jumps into the water and fishes out Sally from the…

#CriterionChallenge 10 was to watch a randomly generated spine number. 562 came up, which is Brian de Palma's 1981 paranoid thriller Blow Out. One of those films I probably watched while at university, although I only vaguely remember it; it was genuinely gripping.

Cure (1997) A detective starts spiraling out of control when a wave of gruesome murders with seemingly similar bizarre circumstances is sweeping Tokyo.

Latest #CriterionChallenge was 1990s. To avoid rewatches and also cross one off my other list, I chose #KiyoshiKurosawa's extraordinary, unsettling and 'Se7en'-inflected 'Cure'. Might be the best film I've watched this year; it's certainly still firmly in my head

#CriterionChallenge 8 was 1930s. So, time to catch up with a classic I've never seen before, shockingly. What genre is it? Yes.

Delightful and everything everyone says it is, the whole thing passed in the blink of an eye. Sublimely English while being universal.

Born in Flames (1983) In near-future New York, ten years after the “social-democratic war of liberation,” diverse groups of women organize a feminist uprising as equality remains unfulfilled.

#CriterionChallenge no.7 Queer Cinema. Lizzie Borden's explosive guerrila metafictional documentary #BornInFlames which is startlingly contemporary in places, and very much of its time in others. Striking post-punk soundtrack gives it energy and forward motion.

Coup de Grâce (1976) A countess loves her brother's Prussian-officer friend in the 1919 Baltic area.

#CriterionChallenge No.6 was to pick one from the 20 least-watched titles in the Criterion catalogue. Plumped for this sobering, fatalistic view of the collapse of order and the hopelessness of men who only know war. Now want to watch Die Blechtrommel again.
