The painting is set in a dark cave illuminated by crystals. The setting is done with water-based markers, coloured pencils, and acrylic for the crystals. Lola is situated in the middle of the scene, her head against the cave floor, the First Arrow* is shot through her open neck and out of her mouth. Her face is contorted in pain and anger, and her front-arms hold herself in an attempt to self soothe in this time of pain. While her back-arms are propped up, readying to get back up again. Under her hands is the Second Arrow, snapped in half. Lola herself is painted with watercolour, watercolour pencil, ink and gouache. *The Two Arrows is a parable originally from Buddhism. The story is about being hurt, pained, by the “first arrow” that strikes you. Then spiraling into fear, paranoia, overthinking what happens now because of the first arrow hitting you. That is the effect of the “second arrow”. The arrow born from what your mind does. The story is meant to teach the listener about being mindful of how they respond to painful situations in life, as to not hit themselves with the second arrow.
