David, F., Cheval, J. (1959). Arbre Historique de la France.

The two cartouches have been overlaid (each 50% opacity) to visualize the clustering of armaments and other militarily situated paraphernalia.

From the original image described as:

"A large decorative broadside represents the history of France in a shape of a tree, starting with six tribes, that formed the French nation. Each branch represents one French royal line with most notable events in the shape of leaves. The last events on the leaves on the upper right-hand side are dated in 1859 under Napoleon III. Our example appears to be slightly later imprint with faded lithographed lines and the coloring is made with crude stencils. The other examples we could trace on the marked had clearer lines and leaves coloured in details." (Alexander Johnson/Dasa Pahor, 2024)

Sheet 1. SAS The Global Airline. Created by Jorleif Uthaug in 1956. Oslo, Norway.

#PubNote
Large wall map in nine sheets which, when joined, measure 278cm x 381cm. Shows the worldwide routes of the Scandinavian Airlines System. Shows celestial constellations and scenes of people around the globe. Similar in scope and style to the large Boucher world maps for Air France (see our 10284.000 and 10163.000) and the TWA world map (see our 10164.000). The map's maker, artist Jørleif Uthaug, sculptor, painter, and graphic artist, (1911-90) was a spearhead and trail blazer in modernistic abstract art in Norway. He created works of art for cruise liners, hotels, schools, municipality buildings, in materials as varied as stone, wood and glass mosaics, steel, brass, iron and canvases of various sizes. See http://www.uthaug.n… for more information on him. The map uses a special map projection by Dr. A. Refsdal, although we could find no information on it.

Looking at a few records the AI summaries have pushed down (but not replaced) the “Pub Info” header containing detailed info written by humans.

Zoomed out [portion] of map showing the full extent of the AI Generated Summary for Blaeu, Willem Janszoon (1621) map titled: Pascaarte van alle de Zecusten van Europa. Nieulycx beschreven door Willem Ians Blauw.

AI-Generated Summary:
The image depicts "Pascaarte van alle de Zecusten van Europa," a notable sea chart by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, crafted in 1621. This chart is a significant example of Dutch Baroque cartography and measures 85 cm in width and 71 cm in height. It was originally published by Blaeu himself and is classified as a chart map.

Composition and Medium:
The chart is crafted with meticulous detail, showcasing the coastlines of Europe, parts of North Africa, and the Mediterranean region. It was printed on vellum, a material known for its durability, which was essential for its use aboard ships. The map's rough condition and edge holes suggest it was once nailed to a ship's pilothouse table for navigational reference.

Martin Behaim's Erdapfel, 1492. (Facsimile of Behaim's Globe).
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/s7q969
Martin Behaim's Erdapfel (earth apple) is the oldest surviving terrestrial globe. It exists in only one manuscript copy painted by Georg Glockendon, held Nuremberg, Germany. It shows the world according to Ptolemy and other sources, before the discovery of America by Columbus in the same year as the globe was made, 1492. Behaim's globe vividly shows the earth without America and illustrates why Columbus thought he could sail directly west from Europe and land in China and the East Indies. This facsimile of Behaim's globe gores and callots was made by E.G. Ravenstein in 1908 and is generally considered the best available facsimile. It is based on both the original globe and an earlier facsimile made in 1847 by E.F.Jomard, as well as other sources for the notes and place names. While it is by no means a completely faithful copy of the original, it does express the overall intent of Behaim's globe. We have georeferenced the 12 globe gores and 2 polar callots, allowing the reprojection of the 14 separate sections into continuous world maps on several different projections. From the David Rumsey Map Collection.

Published by the USGS Astrogeology Science Center in 2014.
https://www.davidrumsey.com/globes/venus-colorized
This synthetic colorized version of the C3-MIDR mosaic was developed to simulate the surface of Venus. This mosaic was created from the Magellan Full resolution Basic Image Data Records (F-BIDRs), the highest resolution radar images of the Venus surface (~75 meters per pixel [m]). To make this product, the F-BIDR is assembled into Full-Resolution Mosaicked Image Data Records (F-MIDRs) which are then averaged in successive operations resulting in each pixel being the average of nine pixels resulting in compressed BIDR or C-BIDR. The resulting C-BIDR are then mosaicked into 8192 x 8192 arrays called C1-MIDR (Compressed Once - Mosaicked Image Data Record) which are then further compressed into C2- and C3-MIDR.

Great map! Interesting to see some of the "state" names found later on the early 1900s Dominion of Canada maps - #Assiniboia, #Saskatchewan, #Mackenzie labeled. Here is a 1902 map with those divisions highlighted www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet...

From the David Rumsey Map Collection: Panorama des incendies de Paris par la Commune. Nuits des 23, 24 et 25 mai 1871. "Very rare and spectacular bird's-eye view of Paris burned down, drawn and lithographed in color by Isidore Deroy. These fires took place during the final episode of the Paris Commune, between Sunday 21 and Sunday 28 May 1871. At the end of this episode, called the Bloody Week, the Commune was crushed, with mass executions of its members. The large fires that will set many Parisian monuments ablaze begin on May 23. As we can see on the print, several fires will devastate the Tuileries Palace, the Louvre, the Palais-Royal, the Ministry of Finance, the Prefecture of Police, the Palais de Justice, the Palais d'Orsay (at the location of the current Musee d'Orsay), as well as the Hotel de Ville, of which all of the Paris archives, as well as all of the Parisian civil status, will be annihilated. The view is taken from the Place de la Concorde looking east, and shows, with impressive night effects, the fires whose lights reflect on the Seine." (Begonia Le Bail, 2021)
