A good way to end a #DayOfScience is with a good book. Really enjoying Getting to the Heart of Science Communication by @frkearns right now. Other recent reads include @KHayhoe's Saving Us, @allwecansave, Braiding Sweetgrass, & @PlantLessons by @BerondaM 📚❤

Since I am a first-year Ph.D. student at @MSU_IBIO & @EEB_MSU, my #DayOfScience involves a lot of learning through my two classes: Statistical Methods in Ecology and Population & Community Ecology 📚

Little treat to end my #DayOfScience! We had @saltandstraw delivered this week! We haven’t been up to Portland since March because of the pandemic. And their October flavors are always some of my favorites. 🤤

Last bit of work during my #DayOfScience! I am reviewing class reflection submissions from my class while watching “The Great Pottery Throw Down”. My wonderful TA grades all of these assignments, but I go through a read them all and comment on the students thoughts & questions.

Fern is channeling how I feel after this super long #DayOfScience on Zoom. 😹 I still have a small amount of work to do tonight, but for now - dinner time (made by my awesome and supportive partner) and cat cuddles!

After 6hrs of Zoom teaching/meetings/trainings today, I went for a walk at the local park and listened to an episode of @Gastropodcast. I had hoped to go for a run, but mentally I was too exhausted. The walk helped me unwind. Don’t worry I have a mask with me too! #DayOfScience

Last Zoom meeting of my #DayOfScience! I am participating in a training program this year focused on inclusive excellence in teaching in STEM. We meet every Thursday and I am learning so much about such an important topic!

Had a 1-hour break between Zoom meetings today. So I sat outside in the backyard for a bit to get some fresh air. #DayOfScience.

One of the benefits of remote learning, @gnatthebrat was able to easily join my class all the way from BC. A highlight of my #DayOfScience will definitely be us teaching in matching dinosaur overalls. I don’t know if our students found this as amusing as we did. 🤣

My #DayOfScience is Zoom-ful! I just got out of three hours of back-to-back-to-back Zoom meetings. One of which was my protected areas management class. We talked about the Wilderness Act & volcano monitoring! And since I know nothing about geology, @gnatthebrat joined us today!

My #DayOfScience (and really every day of science I’ve had since March) takes place in my home office. I finally have a set-up that works well for this #WFH environment.

My first major task for today is teaching my parks and protected areas management class via Zoom.

Today is my #DayOfScience! I am a recreation ecologist. I study the impact outdoor recreation has on the environment. I also teach classes in outdoor recreation management. Most of my research happens in National Parks. So I have many NPS mugs to pick from for my morning coffee.

That’s it from me! I had a lot of fun sharing my #dayofscience & being part of a global community of scientists doing the same! Thanks @science_a_thon for showing the world the diversity of what it means to be a scientist. ✌️

It turns out I didn’t do too much direct science on my #dayofscience. At this stage of my career, I find myself increasingly focused on the next generation (both in the classroom & via training/mentoring research students)

Hi there! Thanks for following along for my @science_a_thon #dayofscience a few days ago! I have a few follow-up thoughts, but first a massive THANK YOU to everyone who donated to @ESWNtweets & @GirlsWhoCode. It’s not too late to contribute:...

Ending my #dayofscience around 8:30pm. Home from dinner w/ the interview candidate. Now cuddled on the couch with some knitting & a kitty. Not much “science” happened today. But lots of teaching and mentoring did. And those two things are a big reason why I am a scientist. 👩🏻‍🏫

It’s 5pm and I am still in my office (but check out my view)! Not typical for a #dayofscience for me, but I am attending dinner with an interview candidate as part of my service commitment. So I am working until dinner and currently writing a letter of recommendation.

Reaching the end of my #dayofscience! It’s 4pm and part of being a university professor means service is part of my job. I am currently on a search committee for a position in the College. I couldn’t make it to the interview talk across campus, but am watching from my office.

Spent this afternoon from about 2pm to 4pm with graduate students and postdocs chatting about recreation ecology! A huge highlight of my #dayofscience! They have such amazing insights and questions - and mentoring is such an amazing part of my job as a scientist. @science_a_thon

I may or may not also be listening to @lizzo while I prep for this discussion. A #dayofscience requires good tunes.

Still at my computer for my 1pm hour #DayofScience for @science_a_thon. Since my field is so interdisciplinary, many grad students join my lab with little background in recreation science. So I often hold a reading/seminar classes for my lab. Prepping for today’s discussion now!

Midday of my #dayofscience: Next week I will presenting on a panel at the National Wilderness workshop. I will be talking about my research using citizen science to monitor visitor use in Yellowstone NP. I am currently writing up my talking points to share with other panelists.
