A mosaic of deep-sky images reveals Comet 57P/du Toit-Neujmin-Delporte has fragmented into at least 19 pieces. The image shows the comet's nucleus and coma (far left) with the fragments trailing behind, spanning about a million kilometers. Each fragment is likely tens to hundreds of meters across. Captured by the University of Hawai'i 2.2-meter Telescope in 2002 by Yan Fernandez.

Stunning image of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) with mysterious, oxygen-emitting arcs in blue near it. The origin of these arcs is unknown, posing a puzzle for astronomers: are they associated with Andromeda or merely coincidentally positioned gas filaments in our own Milky Way? This recent discovery by amateur astronomers highlights the contributions of dedicated enthusiasts to space exploration.

I’m diving into the history of astrophotography—from early Moon shots on glass plates to modern deep-sky captures from backyard rigs.
A longform piece is in the works for all the amateur stargazers and photon hunters out there. Stay tuned!

Stunning deep-space image of IC 4592, a reflection nebula in Scorpius. The nebula's bluish glow is created by dust reflecting light from nearby stars, including a star in the Nu Scorpii system. A fainter, horse-head shaped nebula is also visible. This image requires deep exposure to reveal the fainter features.

First test of EQ mode on the #seestars50. 23mins of 20 sec subs with just a hand full of rejected frames under as tight breeze. I’m pretty happy with this result on #m42. #astronomy #astrophotography #deepskyimaging

After a long, cold, cloudy winter, tonight, on it’s last day, I will finally get a shot at imaging #Orion as it slips to the west. It’s been a while since I put this rig together. May the clear sky forecast be correct! #astronomy #astrophotography #deepskyimaging.
