DRDO Develops SWaDeS: Portable Device That Turns Seawater into Drinking Water for Soldiers
India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed SWaDeS, a new hand-operated water purification device that can convert seawater into safe drinking water. Designed for soldiers deployed in remote coastal and island regions, the system can be operated manually or powered by an engine, ensuring reliability even without electricity.
The lightweight and portable device enhances troop self-sufficiency, reduces logistical dependence, and strengthens operational readiness in harsh environments—another step forward in India’s defence innovation and Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
