Tuesday 24th June
Charles ‘Chuck’ Taylor was born on this day 1901 in rural Indiana. He went to school in Columbus and played guard for the school basketball team.
The Converse Rubber Shoe Company was started in Massachusetts in 1908 and launched the ‘Non-Skid’ Basketball shoe which Chuck Taylor wore in high school basketball and through his semi-professional basketball career in 1917.
In 1921 Chuck Taylor went to visit the Converse offices in Chicago to tell the company about several flaws he had noticed in the shoes. He advised on improved ankle support and flexibility in the sole. He was hired on the spot to be a consultant and salesman for the company.
The restyled shoe, with a trademark star and Chuck’s signature on a patch on the ankle were marketed as Chuck Taylor All Stars. Chuck spent the next 48 years working for the company, helping to refine the shoe and selling them to basketball players all over the country. Whilst he was paid a salary throughout he was never paid a commission on the estimated 600 million pairs of Chuck Taylors that have been sold.
Chuck retired from Converse in 1968 and was inducted into Basketball hall of fame in 1969. He died not long after his induction, one day short of his birthday in 1969. Converse sales declined in the 1970s, but made a comeback as a fashion sneaker in the 1980s. Converse were bought out by Nike in 2003.
Questions:
Do you own a pair of Chuck Taylors? What do you think of them? Did you know the history of the brand?
Is it important that designers and inventors listen to the end users of their products?
Is there a skill to making a design or brand becoming iconic or is it all luck?

Tuesday's TGT is another in the #designclassic series, Chuck Taylor's All Stars by Converse. A great story in listening to end users feedback, but perhaps not in getting a percentage commission in writing.
