an excerpt from my book "how to be a design student (and how to teach them)": "One last thing: I absolutely refuse to refer to college
students as kids. They are not kids. All they are is younger than the instructor (and sometimes they are older). Referring to them as kids, treating them like kids, talking about them like they are kids makes them feel like kids, strips them of their agency and responsibility to make decisions for themselves, and inherently says that they should wait for the grown-ups (in this case, their teachers) to tell them what to do. I not only think this is wrong, I think it is repulsive, offensive, and hinders the learning process. My students get treated like adults.
They are responsible for their own decisions, and they learn how to be themselves very, very quickly in my classes. If eighteen is old enough to vote in an election and die in a war, it is old enough to not be called a kid by a design teacher."
