Snow totals 15 inches below average in Detroit this past winter: NWS Winter cold still may have its grip on Metro Detroit, but when it comes to snowfall, the region was below average for the season. Detroit Metro Airport saw 26.9 inches of snowfall from Oct. 1 through March 20, the first day of spring, according to Trent Frey, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. That's 15.3 inches below the average for that period, which is 42.2 inches. Other parts of Michigan saw significantly more snow than Metro Detroit this season, including Traverse City, which had 146.9 inches from Oct. 1 through March 20, and Gaylord, which had 192.2 inches. Mike Panich, executive director for the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association, said that as a whole, the ski industry in Michigan was very strong this year. He said most of the ski shops that his association has spoken with saw "excellent sales." More: Michigan ski resorts looking uphill for snow relief Frey of the National Weather Service said Metro Detroit didn't get any "big events" for snow this season. He said the region got an inch of snow here and there. "But we didn't really see any big, 6+ inch snowfall amounts this winter," he said. He said that when you compare Oct. 1-March 20 to the same period in previous years, it was the 37th least snowy winter for Metro Detroit. Flint saw 38.4 inches of snow from Oct. 1 through March 20, which is below the average of 48.2 inches for that period. Grand Rapids had 63.3 inches, compared to 74.2 inches on average. Here are the snowfall amounts for other communities in Metro Detroit and Michigan: * White Lake: 42.9 inches * Ann Arbor: 38.8 inches * Dearborn: 14.2 inches * Pontiac: 19.4 inches * Marquette: 150.3 inches How SE Michigan's ski resorts fared Southeast Michigan is home to four ski resorts. Panich, executive director for the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association, said temperatures in the Metro Detroit region were consistently cold enough for ski resorts to maintain the snow that they made and continue making snow. Last year, on the other hand, there wasn't a lot of natural snow and the temperatures weren't consistently cold. "So everything I've heard from the four resorts over there for the year, they've had outstanding turnouts of customers and that their numbers were way up from the last two" years, he said. But he acknowledged that he doesn't have actual data from the ski resorts yet. Kelsey Megard, a spokesperson for Vail Resorts, which owns Mount Brighton in Genoa Township, said the resort had "a fantastic 2024-25 season with consistent cold temperatures." "Unlike last year, when fluctuating temperatures led to mid-season pauses in operations, this season provided the perfect conditions for both snowmaking and natural snowfall to maintain a strong base throughout," she said in an email. Megard declined to share visitation or customer spending data. She said Mount Brighton was open for 95 days this season, compared to 82 days last season. She noted that the 13 additional days of snow made "a big difference for both our guests and our team." "This year, the steady cold allowed us to make snow early and often, keeping conditions fresh all season long," she said. "Our snowmaking team took full advantage of these conditions." asnabes@detroitnews.com Want to comment on this story? Become a subscriber today. Click here.
