Growing Impact of Distributed Solar Energy on New England's Electric Grid Recent heat wave conditions in New England demonstrated the growing impact of distributed solar energy. Experts note that rooftop solar panels helped stabilize the electric grid and temper energy costs during the period of intense demand. According to Jamie Dickerson of Acadia Center, "behind the meter" solar installations – those serving homes and businesses directly – lessen the overall electricity needed during peak hours. On June 24, when temperatures soared, electricity generated by residential and commercial solar systems proved critical in maintaining grid stability, even as ISO New England had to activate backup power reserves to meet requirements. This clean energy generation avoided substantial wholesale electricity market costs and ensured continued power supply for consumers. ISO New England reported electricity demand reached levels not seen since 2013, nearing a record set in 2006. During the heat wave, private solar arrays across the region mitigated demand by approximately 2 gigawatts, a power output comparable to that of a nuclear power plant. ISO New England spokesperson Mary Cate Colapietro emphasized that without this solar contribution, peak demand would have occurred sooner and at a higher level. The increase in solar power adoption in recent years is noticeably altering the electricity landscape in New England, with the grid experiencing 100 days last year where midday power demand decreased due to solar generation.
