MOSAIC EMBLEMA WITH LION, 70 BCE - 10 CE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM

This mosaic emblema or central floor panel is made with small tiles, a style known as opus vermiculatum, "wormy work". This panel must once have decorated the floor of a room in a wealthy house. The panel, predominantly of tiny yellow tesseræ against a white background, with details in red and black, shows a lion with his tongue hanging out, at least three of his four limbs bound by resolute-looking Erotes of varying sizes. Behind one of his hind legs and the Eros who is binding it is a bowl on the ground: we might infer that the lion, symbol of strength, is drunk as a sailor. An Eros behind the lion seems to be about to prod or bash him with a kind of speargun. In front of the lion and above him are Erotes with cymbals and a red cloth to enrage him like a bull. In the background is a tall figure in long robes, Dionysus himself, holding a thyrsus. The message is clear: nothing is stronger than the god of wine.

For #MosaicMonday at the #BritishMuseum, an #emblema from an unknown #domus in #Naples with a #Dionysiac theme. A bound #lion is taunted by four #Erotes as the god himself watches from a hilltop. A bowl in the foreground may have contained wine. Strength cannot resist #Dionysus. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FRESCOES OF THE ROOM OF THE CUPIDS IN THE HOUSE OF THE VETTII, 50-79 CE. POMPEII

This magnificent room is best known for its bands of black painted friezes with Erotes working away at various trades. But the overall impression of the room is one of red, with the walls largely covered in red cinnabar, one of the most expensive of pigments. In this corner we see two floating couples. At left a nymph and a satyr are already embracing within their red panel, and at right a male Apollo-like god is importuning a nymph who's saying no, not that the gods took no for an answer. It is interesting to note the discolouration of the red wall at right. This was caused by the heat of the boiling mud that invaded the house during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE.

#FrescoFriday in #Pompeii brings us to the #HouseoftheVettii, one of the most splendid #domus in the city. In the room of the #Cupids, the dominant colour is red #cinnabar with floating couples, 50-79 CE. Heat from the volcano's pyroclastic flow has altered the red wall at right. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FLOOR MOSAIC OF THE MONTHS, FRAGMENT WITH NOVEMBER AS ISIS, 375 CE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM

This fragment was part of a large floor mosaic depicting the months and seasons, from a wealthy domus in Carthage 2.0, the Roman version, which was the main city of Roman North Africa. The female figure represents November, which we know because she is holding a sistrum, a kind of rattle used in Isaic ceremonies. The main festival for Roman worshippers of Isis was the Isia, which occupied the last days of October and the first day of November. It was a long celebration that may have influenced the Christian feast of Easter: the first days were full of wailing and mourning for the death of Osiris, who had died at the hand of the evil god Set. The body of Osiris was cut into pieces and scattered across Egypt. Isis set out to gather them and reassemble her husband, and November 1 was the Heuresis or "finding", when Osiris returned to life and all was joyous. November 3 was the Hilaria or day of joy.

WALL FRESCO DETAIL, 30-20 BCE, FROM THE DOMUS OF THE FARNESINA. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME

So at first this looks like the start of a sex scene like the ones we find in the other cubicula of this grand Roman house on the Tiber riverbank. Pale woman kissing dark-skinned man in a bedroom. But! This time the woman is holding a cup of wine, and she's kissing a somewhat androgynous figure who is barely reciprocating. The woman's clothes are slipping off her shoulder, her head tilts upward for the kiss, showing off her elegant white neck. But her fellow participant, who has short hair and a leafy crown, is fully dressed in a yellow-brown cloak with a long-sleeved dress underneath that goes down to the toes. An empty chair is prominent in the right foreground. But I don't think this is a Sapphic moment. Dionysus sometimes appears in women's clothing or even in female form. I think his divine impassivity hints that the woman is seeking comfort in wine. He will offer the comfort but only because she asks for it.

#FrescoFriday takes us back into the White Bedroom of the #domus of the #Farnesina in #Rome, where an illusionistic shuttered window opens into a boudoir where a woman whose dress is slipping off her shoulder is kissing... another woman? A lesbian moment in Agrippa's bedroom? #AncientBluesky 🏺

WALL FRESCO OF A DIVINITY, 30-20 BCE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME

This beautiful female figure, elongated to impossible proportions like the Columbia Pictures logo lady, is on the wall of the main cubiculum of the ancient domus of the Farnesina, probably where Augustus' daughter Julia and her husband Agrippa slept. The whole room has frescoes with a white background, unusual for a bedroom. Spindly columns of vaguely Egyptian inspiration divide up the wall space. This figure is wearing a white peplos and stola against the white background, but she's far from camouflaged. Her head is slightly tilted, with an appraising expression on her face. Her crown is of leaves. In her right hand she holds a baton or other cylindrical object at shoulder level, her arm bent. The cylinder goes behind her shoulder. She stands on a low pedestal of blue-green which rests on a red ground. Is she a statue of a Muse or goddess?

DOMUS SOLARATA, C9 CE. FORUM OF NERVA

Here we see, at dusk, the still-impressive portico of a high-medieval house built into the ruins of the Forum of Nerva using stone, including the tufo from the Forum Romanum-facing end of Nerva's Forum. There are bits and pieces of marble, and the vestigial upper floor seems to have been made with marble chips and mortar. This was an aristocratic house, with a curtis or court toward the Forum Romanum and a hortus or garden on its other side. The portico followed the edge of the important street called the Argiletum, which crossed the Forum of Nerva. The pavement of marble had been removed a century or so previously to be burnt into lime, so the new pavement was cobbled together from other stone fragments and even horse bones.

WALL FRESCO FROM THE DOMUS OF THE FARNESINA, 30-20 BCE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME

The mythology of Dionysus is so full of amazing and contradictory accounts that it would be worth exploring in detail. But suffice it to say that one strain of his infancy legend has Zeus send his son via Hermes to Mount Nysa, where he was raised by the Nysiads, nymphs who raised him with Silenus as his tutor. In this extraordinarily beautiful fresco from Cubiculum B of the domus of the Farnesina, a seated nymph at right is putting a wreath on the head of the baby, who is sitting on her lap. Her shoulders are bare and she may have been nursing Dionysus. Her iridescent drapery is in ochre over a blue dress. To the right are two standing nymphs, both looking off to the right with concern. Both are fully dressed with their heads covered. One looks rather old; the one in the front holds a fan. At far left a statuette of Zeus overlooks the scene. At right a thyrsus is leaning against a wall.

MOSAIC FLOOR WITH MONTHS AND SEASONS, C. 375 CE. BRITISH MUSEUM

Here we see a detail of a fragmentary floor discovered in 1857 in Roman Carthage, the shipping hub of North Africa in the late western empire. At the corners of the floor are representations of the seasons: here we see Summer wreathed with grain, her large-eyed beautiful face modelled with subtle shading. She's glancing leftward and is wearing earrings and a gold necklace, a tunic with a gold stripe on the shoulder, and a red stola over her shoulders. A wonderful ribbon frame surrounds two sides of this detail. Springing upward toward the centre of the floor is a leafy stalk, and to either side acanthus leaves curl against a white background.

GEOMETRIC FLOOR IN OPUS SECTILE, C4 CE. ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA OF THE OSPEDALE DI S. GIOVANNI

The discovery of two statue bases naming L. Licinius Sura give us the identity of the owner of a vast domus on the Caelian hill near the property of the Plautii Laterani, of a similar date, which gave the toponym "Lateran" to the cathedral of Rome. Sura was a general under the emperor Tiberius and an ancestor of the Licinius Sura who was a close friend (lover?) of the early C2 emperor Trajan. The latter Licinius Sura had a different house on the slope of the Aventine. The Lateran domus of the Licinii Surae had extensive gardens making use of the huge amount of aqueduct water that crossed the area, and a gigantic cistern remains to show part of the property's hydraulic work. This floor in serpentino, porphyry, giallo antico, and other marbles was found in a room adjoining the garden.

MOSAIC PAVEMENT, LATE C3-C4 CE. EXCAVATIONS UNDER THE OSPEDALE DI S. GIOVANNI IN LATERANO

This detached and fragmentary mosaic pavement comes from a room facing onto a garden, in a small domus backing onto the huge domus of the Annii Veri and possibly, at the time of the making of this mosaic, incorporated into the larger domus, by then part of the imperial demesne. It has a geometric design with black blocks set in a brick pattern surrounded by "mortar" in white mosaic. The border has black and coloured designs including four busts representing the Seasons, of which one and a half survive. Here we see the probable figure of Winter, head in a white hood.

PILASTER, C. 140 CE, IN FOUNDATION, C18. OSPEDALE DI S. GIOVANNI IN LATERANO

The vast complex of the medieval and modern hospital of San Giovanni - Addolorata at the Lateran covers and conceals an aristocratic district with several large domus incuding the domus Anniorum, the huge residence of Annius Verus and his wife Domitia Lucilla, the parents of the emperor Marcus Aurelius. This broken marble pilaster, still in situ, comes from a garden peristyle with two pools. Between the pilasters, a marble transenna or balustrade separated the garden from the shady covered peristyle that surrounded it.

OPUS SECTILE FLOOR, 385-388 CE. MUSEO DELLE CIVILTÀ

This extraordinary opus sectile pavement only finds comparisons in the House of Cupid and Psyche in Ostia and in the Diocletianic opus sectile floor of the Curia Senatus, which has been heavily restored. Here we have a background of giallo antico and a complex pattern of polygonal shapes with three recurrent themes, the circle, the four-pointed star, and the strange pelta or C-shaped shield. At the centre of each four-pointed star is a circle of alternating porphyry and serpentino set inside a round frame, or a circle of those marbles inset with a square of giallo antico or brecciated white marble. Within the octagons created between the stars, on a background of pavonazzetto, are circles framed with porphyry, with four peltæ in serpentino. This is a sophisticated and expensive floor, and the room must have had a public or ceremonial function.

SCENE FROM A CORRIDOR IN THE DOMUS OF THE FARNESINA, 30-20 BCE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME

A baffling scene from a myth or a ritual. Against a blue-green background, two women are walking toward the right. Both are wearing long plain chitons with red lines along the sides going from shoulder to hem. The shorter woman in the front seems to be wearing a shield on her head, convex side out, which is covered with leafy branches of laurel or olive. She holds another branch in her left hand and steadies the shield with her right. She looks a bit downtrodden. Behind her, at left, is a taller woman (?) whose face is missing, dressed identically. In both hands she holds a very strange tool in black, a straight diagonal line which expands upward like 3 sides of a rectangle before returning to its original line. A dotted line closes off the bottom of this shape, and I've interpreted this as a sort of jigsaw, possibly for cutting the branches the woman in front is carrying. I have no idea what is going on here. The internet offers no clues. But I *can* say with confidence that if you wear these outfits for Halloween, absolutely no one will guess who you are.

Costume suggestions for #FrescoFriday #Halloween from a #fresco from the #domus of the #Farnesina, 30-20 BCE: this odd pair of women in long chitons, one in front with a shield on her head topped with olive branches, and another taller woman behind, holding a menacing little saw. #AncientBluesky 🏺

This delightful cephalopod in giallo antico was found in a pile of similar loose pieces of cut stone on the floor of the opus sectile hall of the domus of Porta Marina. Evidently they had never been installed, as they had no trace of the adhesive material (bitumen) that held such pieces to the wall. Was this house abandoned before it was finished, or did the design plans change midway? It is certainly hard to place this octopus in the decorative program of the room. On the tentacles, the suckers are clearly indicated, and there are two eyes on the main body, with a rather irregularly inscribed line within the main body, outlining most of it but creating a concave curve between the eyes, giving this octopus a worried frown.

Floating up from the darkness of late antiquity is this #opussectile #octopus from the #domus of #PortaMarina in #OstiaAntica, now in the #MuseodelleCiviltà in #Rome. This sea creature in giallo antico comes from somewhere in the famous opus sectile room, dating from 385-388 CE. #MosaicMonday 🏺

Two partial faces in opus sectile, made in a very simple, almost childlike style, with round open eyes in white marble, open mouths without lips (missing or never made) and skin in giallo antico. They seem to be watching the approaching disaster, whether by sea or by earthquake, that shattered the structure possibly even before it was finished.

#MosaicMonday brings us to the #MuseodelleCiviltà in #Rome for these two faces in #opussectile from the #domus of #PortaMarina in #OstiaAntica, dating to 385-388 CE. This splendid house had a mysteriously short life, and these faces seem to be reacting to imminent destruction. #AncientBluesky 🏺
