The double empathy problem does not mean autistic people lack empathy. It means empathy is not unidirectional. Neurotypical people also fail to understand us. That part rarely gets named. #DoubleEmpathyProblem

Neurodivergent people are not poor communicators. We are people communicating correctly for our neurology inside systems that only recognize one communication style as valid. #DoubleEmpathyProblem
Alice would probably find it easier to concentrate if lessons were #neuro-affirming.
It would be great to see #neurodivergent -authored theory & #EdRes referenced in these discussions.

The second installment of my new blog series. This one looks at The Double Empathy problem and how this helps us understand Autistic experience.

This letter to the British Journal of Psychiatry tells us everything we need to know about current thinking in #autism research. Concise, accessible & powerful. Read it if you think autism = social deficits! #DoubleEmpathyProblem www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Absolutely. For autistic children, oracy T&L in schools would prob mean NT oracy, if based on any kind of non-autistic-authored scheme, resource or approach.
Improved adult listening & training on the #doubleempathyproblem would prob help.
Overeggged in what way btw?
While we have had equal & opposite cultural conditioning to hold in extremely low esteem groups eg NDs with lived experience (all ages), parents/caregivers & CYP, to the extent that #actuallyautistic knowledge (eg of #sensoryneeds) is not regarded as valid viewed by #NTgaze.

Today sucked. I am sure somewhere there are people that would love and appreciate me, but I haven't found them yet. If you happen to be reading this, I bet I would appreciate you if we met. Don't give up! #actuallyautistic #doubleempathyproblem #cptsd #emotionalabuseisabuse
negative impacts - eg that stem from minority stress, poor service provision, burnout etc - are externally verifiable. There are empirical studies, eg that show that NTs make negative ‘thin-slice’ judgements re autistic people, as per the #doubleempathyproblem
it’s quite hard for eg NT teachers to attune to these needs, because of the #doubleempathyproblem. Regarding scaffolding, it might be counterintuitive for teachers to keep the support in place when CYP doesn’t ‘need’ it, esp if CYP SEN not recognised, eg due to EHCNA gatekeeping.
A complex
We also need to look critically at eg GCSE marking criteria - prob lots is overdue for decolonisation, eg re the #doubleempathyproblem that exists between eg an #autistic child and a non-autistic examiner.
That it’s unfair. Unusual or unexpected responses to assessment qs are penalised, eg because of the #doubleempathyproblem 🤷♀️

That’s why we also stress including autistic voices in research. Who better to define what a meaningful social interaction looks like than those who experience them? Let's build more inclusive and accurate science. #Autism #Neurodiversity #DoubleEmpathyProblem
experience #schooldistress to the extent that #attendance is impossible. Further ?mistakes? include the sloppy conflation of diagnosis, ‘labels’ & EHCPs, seemingly to invalidate each and further erase cognitive outliers from the teacher gaze, thereby amplifying the #doubleempathyproblem. Finally,
And if we’re talking about autistic children (which we often are where absence/placement breakdown is concerned), effective comms prob v difficult unless school can recognise & mitigate the #doubleempathyproblem
No, bullies don’t wait for the label before they bully children with SEND.
Please see research on the #doubleempathyproblem and thin slice judgements.

It would be lovely to see engagement with autistic-authored education theory, such as #monotropism and the #doubleempathyproblem, when education for autistic children is being discussed.
The context mattered most. Autistic participants reported the highest rapport when they knew their partner was also autistic, supporting the idea of a distinct autistic social style that thrives between autistic people. #DoubleEmpathyProblem

operate in our own conceptual & perceptual comfort zones (domains?) and it’s hard to switch across to someone else’s to value what they’re doing over there? I’m thinking esp of Milton’s #doubleempathyproblem re autistic/non-autistic glitchy communication & understanding.

A very complex issue! Imv there is a #doubleempathyproblem between autistic candidates and non-autistic examiners in the English GCSE mark scheme. However, GCSE bell-curve grading requires a lot of failures, so even if that and other structural inequities were addressed, a proportion of children
I agree. I also think you have to factor in the cross-neurotype issues, eg the #doubleempathyproblem, esp if the teacher/school culture is NT and the students may be ND.
Have you experienced going into very closed, insular, communities? Do you find it easy to understand the people? Do you find it easy to fit in? open.substack.com/pub/richardc...

Completely agree. We flatter ourselves if, as teachers, we think we can know exactly what ‘stage’ of learning individual students have reached during whichever point on our lesson plan. Esp bearing in mind the #doubleempathyproblem and other glitchy relational phenomena at play.
