She stares at us with a direct, almost challenging gaze, red lips slightly pursed. Below, her right hand holds a paintbrush, fingers tense at the edge, while the background dissolves into near-black, making the artist and lamp feel suspended in a pool of light. The lamp turns this into a drama of self-scrutiny. Éber paints herself not as a passive muse but as a working artist, interupted in the act of thinking, reading, or preparing to work. The intense side-lighting recalls baroque chiaroscuro, yet the flickering brushwork and electric glow belong to a modern, mid-20th-century Budapest. Born in Baja in 1905, Éber trained at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts under Gyula Rudnay and began exhibiting self-portraits in the National Salon while still a student. The battered lampshade and stark bulb evoke both vulnerability and resilience as the artist stands alone in the dark, yet she also controls the light that defines her features.
