Festive little shout-out to the school bookshop! However, it’s from 1980 - zenith of the dreaded #Sellotape obsession 😣 #EYAConservation Image from the Ysgol Rhydfelen Scrapbook Collection currently being worked on by our volunteers 📚📚📚

Mae'r llun yn dangos taflen liw yn cael ei dal gan selotep ar dudalen lwyd. Ar y dde, mae darlun o olygfa eira, gyda bwthyn coch yn y pellter. Yn y blaen, mae sled goch yn llawn llyfrau, yn cael ei thynnu gan gi gwyn, ac uwch ei ben mae ymbarél wedi torri.
Ar y chwith mae’r geiriau canlynol:

Conservators are multiplying fast in Munster this Autumn! A month ago we welcomed Luca De Cilladi, the first conservation intern @ucclibrary.bsky.social, co-funded by @theheritagecouncil.

We also visited Lara Artemis at University of Limerick.

Our latest conservation project is also the most visible! Bethlem's turret clock, on top of the Museum building, is being restored and will tell the time for our visitors early in the New Year 🕰️
Scaffolding is in place, but we’re open as usual!

These beautiful plant drawings were made by an unnamed Chinese artist, possibly at the behest of colonialist John Bradby Blake in 1771-2. Ordinary sticky tape is a nightmare for archives, but acid-free repair tape can be used to patch up torn pages.

When a bound volume of #1920s newspapers got wet, we froze it to prevent mould developing until we had the time and space to dry it out properly. As the wet pages felt slightly tacky we had to interleave them with dry sheets, so they wouldn’t all stick together in the freezer.

To make sure archives are conserved they need to be properly packaged. To do this we keep our archives in protective acid free folders and boxes, like those pictured here, to make sure they stay safe into the future!

Post image Post image Post image A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest in which the character or appearance is desirable to preserve or enhance. The concept was introduced by the Civic Amenities Act of 1967 when it was decided that listing historic buildings individually was not enough to protect groups of buildings.
It was recognised that the special character of a place may derive from many factors, including: the grouping of buildings; their scale and relationship with outdoor spaces; architectural detailing; and so on.

A little gentle cleaning can make such a difference to a record which has seen better days, such as this 1907 plan of Woodbourne Park Building Estate in Douglas. The beautiful artwork of architect Ernest Long now shines out! #EYAConservation #ManxArchives #ExploreYourArchive
