Asia upbeat on Wall St boost as markets await US inflation data By Rae Wee SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Asian stocks edged higher on Friday, riding a tech-driven rally on Wall Street, with investor focus now turning to a key U.S. inflation reading due later in the day for further clues on the Federal Reserve’s rate outlook. The results from artificial intelligence heavyweight Nvidia’s this week, which fell short of investors’ lofty expectations, still confirmed that AI infrastructure spending remains strong, helping lift the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average to record high closes overnight. Markets in Asia latched on to the positive momentum on Friday as MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.4%, though European and U.S. stock futures slipped. EUROSTOXX 50 futures fell 0.2% while FTSE futures eased 0.08%. S&P 500 futures dipped 0.08% and Nasdaq futures lost 0.15%. "Despite the uncertainty around China for Nvidia, the headline revenue growth numbers don’t really suggest that the overall AI story is faltering much. Expectations are just already very high," said Thomas Mathews, head of markets for Asia-Pacific at Capital Economics. "The big picture though is that earnings are still growing very rapidly for U.S. tech companies, and unless that changes materially, the stock market there will probably keep doing ok." In China, the tech-focused STAR 50 Index slid 2.5% after a jump of more than 7% in the previous session. Shares of Chinese chip firm Cambricon Technologies tumbled more than 5% after the company on Thursday issued a risk alert to investors in a stock exchange filing, citing a sharp rise in its stock prices since late July. 3rd party Ad. "Certainly, when you see such a very, very large move, and then some warning coming from the company, you could think that there has been a little bit of overshooting," said Frank Benzimra, head of Asia equity strategy at Societe Generale. "But for me, that is a very normal way of the market functioning, because we all know that the market is going to undershoot on the downside and to overshoot on the upside." Still, the CSI300 blue-chip index was up 0.7% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index gained 0.5%. Japan’s Nikkei slipped 0.4%. WAITING ON PCE In the broader market, focus now turns to the release of the U.S. PCE price index data - the Fed’s preferred measure of inflation - later on Friday. "The market will be on the lookout for any signs of whether or not some of these tariff pass-throughs are starting to filter through into the PCE deflator," said Khoon Goh, head of Asia research at ANZ. "There are three important pieces of data ahead of the September FOMC. So there’s the PCE, then there’s the payrolls number next week, and then the CPI reading." Traders are currently pricing in an 86% chance of a rate cut in September, up from 63% a month earlier, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Fed Governor Christopher Waller on Thursday said he wants to start cutting interest rates next month and "fully expects" more rates cuts to follow to bring the Fed’s policy rate closer to a neutral setting. 3rd party Ad. Not an offer or recommendation by Investing.com. See disclosure here or remove ads. The heightened expectations of imminent Fed rate cuts left the dollar headed for a monthly fall of 2% against a basket of currencies on Friday. The euro was last down 0.2% at $1.1657, pressured in part by political and fiscal worries in France, while sterling eased 0.08% to $1.3497, though was set for a monthly gain of more than 2%. The dollar was also battling headwinds from worries about Fed independence as President Donald Trump steps up his campaign to exert more influence over monetary policy, including his latest attempt to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook. Cook filed a lawsuit on Thursday claiming Trump has no power to remove her from office. Elsewhere, oil prices fell on Friday, with Brent crude futures down 0.68% to $68.15 a barrel, while U.S. crude slid 0.7% to $64.14 per barrel. [O/R] Spot gold was down 0.17% at $3,410.69 an ounce. German fiscal boost: How quickly will higher spending be implemented? Investing.com -- Germany’s ambitious fiscal expansion plan is beginning to take shape, but UBS analysts caution that the pace of implementation may be slower than government projections suggest. The €500 billion infrastructure package, worth 11.6% of GDP over 12 years, and higher defense spending are key pillars of the plan. “Following the announcement and subsequent legislation of the package in the spring, attention is now turning to implementation,” UBS said. Draft budgets for 2025 and 2026 are said to indicate a sharp rise in government investment. “Investment funded from the federal budget and special funds… is planned to rise from 2% of GDP in 2024 to 2.6% in 2025 and further to 2.8% in 2026,” the analysts noted. However, UBS expressed doubt that spending would ramp up so quickly. “The 2025 budget will only be approved by parliament in September, leaving just 3 months to implement a substantial increase,” they wrote, adding that “a large increase this year seems too ambitious to us.” UBS also highlighted Germany’s track record of underspending. “In past years, actual investment often turned out to be slower than initially planned,” they said, citing a 20% shortfall in 2024. Combining infrastructure and defense outlays, UBS expects fiscal stimulus of 0.7% of GDP in 2026 and 0.8% in 2027, contributing roughly 55 basis points and 65 basis points to GDP growth, respectively. While near-term stimulus could help lift GDP growth to 1.9% by 2027, UBS said the long-term effects depend on broader reforms. “The impact on long-term growth prospects is more uncertain and depends a lot on structural reforms,” the analysts concluded. Brazil’s services activity enjoys boost from Lady Gaga’s massive free concert SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Lady Gaga’s concert that drew over 2 million people to Rio de Janeiro likely provided a boost to Brazil’s services activity, statistics agency IBGE said on Friday, as it reported the key sector had expanded for a third consecutive month in April. As fans flocked to Rio for the free concert at Copacabana Beach on May 3, the transport sector helped drive services activity in Latin America’s largest economy up 0.2% in April from March, despite stiflingly high interest rates, IBGE said. "Advanced ticket purchases for the Lady Gaga concert may have influenced the April results. The concert was in May, but ticket purchases were made ahead of it," said the agency’s research analyst, Luiz Almeida, also noting that May 1 was a national holiday. On a yearly basis, services activity grew 1.8% in April, roughly in line with forecasts from economists polled by Reuters. Rio de Janeiro’s city government estimated that 2.1 million people attended Lady Gaga’s show, part of its efforts to bring superstars to perform at free events that authorities say lift the local economy. Brazilian airlines had previously said they saw a boost in demand related to the concert, operating more flights to Rio’s main airports that were close to full. Transport activity in Brazil expanded 0.5% in April from the previous month, according to IBGE, standing out as the only one of the five main groups surveyed to have posted positive results in the period. The South American country had experienced a similar episode in late 2023, when IBGE reported that the six-show Brazilian leg of Taylor Swift’s "The Eras Tour" boosted event-related activities. The service sector is the main driver of Brazil’s economy, and the positive April figures came as the country shows signs of a slowdown amid high borrowing costs, with its benchmark interest rate standing at a near 20-year-high of 14.75%. Cash grant for 19 to 59-year-olds proposed The standing committee on health, social welfare and labour affairs has urged the government to extend social grants to Namibians aged 19 to 59 who currently do not qualify for any form of state support unless they are living with a disability. This recommendation comes after the committee’s investigative report into the basic income grant (BIG) pilot at Otjivero-Omitara, conducted between 5 August 2024 and 9 May 2025, showed that an unconditional monthly grant of N$100 improved livelihoods, boosted local economic activity, and restored dignity to many. The committee’s vice chairperson, Emma Muteka, says before the introduction of te BIG, the main source of income at the settlement was old age pension and child grants. However, she says, this all changed once residents started receiving the BIG. “The settlement was characterised by unemployment, hunger and poverty. Most residents settled there were former farm workers that were dismissed from employment or simply dumped there by their former employers and had nowhere else to go,” says Muteka. According to her, residents reported a significant decline in household poverty, with more families able to afford groceries, cosmetics and clothing items. As a result, some residents were observed starting backyard gardens to supplement the drought relief food that would take long to reach them. The report highlights an increase in economic activity as some beneficiaries have used their combined income to start small businesses such as brick-making, selling ice, baking bread, dress-making and shoe repairs. The rate of those engaged in income generating activities for profit, family gain and self-employment increased significantly, says the report, and children who could not attend school regularly were back in school as the parents could afford to buy school uniforms and pay school fees. Muteka says the income grant also improved their housing infrastructure, with most residents having lived in plastic structures before the grant’s introduction. However, after it was rolled out, numerous families pooled their earnings together and bought corrugated iron sheets and built themselves decent structures. The committee recommends the government establish a one-stop agency to ensure effective and efficient administration, management and payment of social grants, and explore various revenue collection initiatives to supplement their budgetary allocation. The committee says there is a need to synchronise all social grants to eliminate oversubscription. Muteka says poverty is a multifaceted issue, and it is critical to understand the poverty status of vulnerable groups to ensure they receive the support and protection. “We commend the government for the various social assistance programmes in place, however, we observed that there are no programmes in place that target the vulnerable people in the age group 19 to 59, unless the person is disabled,” she says. The report follows a motion tabled in parliament in 2005 which proposed a monthly cash grant of not less than N$100 to every Namibian as a means of providing social protection for poor and vulnerable people. After the report was approved and referred to the committee for investigation, a two-year pilot project commenced in 2022 at the Otjivero-Omitara settlement, about 100km east of Windhoek. A total of about 1 000 people were registered as beneficiaries, irrespective of their social and economic status. The post Cash grant for 19 to 59-year-olds proposed appeared first on The Namibian.
