Instructional rounds, when done with purpose, build trust, collective efficacy & leadership capacity. This conversation reminded me how powerful it is to center learning w/ educators, not around them.
Thanks to Edutopia for inviting me to host & to the educators who shared their wisdom. #EduInFocus

I agree, rounds can be clunky at first. But once we get the hang of it, they become a powerful professional learning experience for school teams. Thank you for participating in our slow chat. #EduInFocus
Was there anything in particular that made the second time easier? #EduInFocus
Monica, I love this honesty. So many of us started out skeptical—until we saw the real impact. When done right, instructional rounds can help create real change. #EduInFocus
Thank you for sharing these experiences. We're certain that participants in this chat will find them instructive. #EduInFocus
For the first few years of doing instructional rounds in my district, we didn’t involve teachers. And while we got results, it didn’t always build trust. Now, in my coaching work, we always include them! Leaders should not make decisions about teachers or talk about them without them. #EduInFocus
#EduInFocus. Q3: What’s something you used to believe about instructional rounds, but no longer do?

Love this, Cathleen. That “Teaching Tasting Menu” is a brilliant way to build collective efficacy. When teachers share what works, everybody wins. #EduInFocus

Instructional rounds work when done right—not for compliance, but for building collective teacher efficacy (CTE). Hattie found CTE has the highest impact on student learning (effect size 1.57). It’s about reflection, clarity, & shared growth. Respect to @drmonicahenson for her results. #EduInFocus
Kate, I’ve found that too. Rounds often uncover strong teaching that’s happening quietly. It’s a powerful way to surface internal expertise and spread it. #EduInFocus
Marcus! Yes, that’s such real insight. I’ve seen the same thing. Rounds highlight how varied student engagement can be across rooms and remind us to stay humble and curious. #EduInFocus
Yes! There’s real power in seeing great teaching in action. It’s often the only way to uncover the quiet expertise that doesn’t always surface in meetings or surveys. Rounds can turn that everyday magic into something visible and shareable. #EduInFocus
A2: one thing I've learned is the important reminder of how students show up in different ways in different classrooms/spaces.
There is SO much to unpack, then, about those different ways—but also the important humility of how limited one classroom perspective is. #EduInFocus
Q2: Rounds I’ve led often uncover schoolwide trends—e.g., low engagement or weak differentiation.
We use that insight to design targeted PD, guide team planning, and drive real improvement. #EduInFocus

Building a growth-centered culture starts with trust 🌱. Instructional rounds should focus on learning together, rather than evaluation. Use reflection protocols that highlight strengths + spark curiosity. When leaders model vulnerability, the culture shifts 🌻.

You’re right—alignment from the start is key. Always begin instructional rounds with team briefings, clear protocols & defined roles. When everyone understands the why, what & how, it keeps things collaborative and purpose-driven—avoiding the resentment you mentioned. Appreciate you. #EduInFocus
#EduinFocus Chefs don’t grow by hiding recipes. They swap them. What if teachers did the same?
We do a Teaching Tasting Menu:Each teacher shares a 10-minute strategy they love or that works for them.
Others “sample” it in rounds focused on the positive flavor.
Collaboration is the secret ingredient.
Will, you nailed it. Building trust is a must. Like you said, when learning walks and similar routines happen regularly, they lose that evaluative feel. That’s why we should make it clear for Ts—this isn’t a formal observation. No names or gotchas. Just growth. #EduInFocus
