For decades there were rumors of ghost elephants in Angola. This explorer found them The Nkangala people of southeast Angola have an origin story: One day, a small elephant walked away from the herd and headed for the Quembo River. At the water’s edge, it began to remove its skin. A watching hunter helped the elephant, and from the creature, a woman emerged. The two formed a union, and from them, the Nkangala were born. They see themselves as the children of elephants, and today they consider themselves the sacred animal’s keeper. But for decades, the Nkangala have been protecting ghosts. A 27-year civil war beginning in 1975 made exploration of Angola’s remote highlands — already a near-impenetrable, largely uninhabited landscape the size of England — impossible. It also made it the perfect place for the world’s largest land animal to hide. South African explorer Steve Boyes dreamed of this herd for a long time. Starting around a decade ago he began venturing into the land, setting 180 camera traps, motion and acoustic and heat sensors, and flew over it in a helicopter. No elephants materialized. They became Boyes’ obsession; a compelling mystery that pulled him into the wilderness, even as part of him questioned whether it was a mystery best left unsolved. A...

One of the best things about Sri Lanka was seeing so many wild #elephants. One charged at our bus near Sigiriya. The best sighting though was seeing a family while on safari at Yala National Park.

Four new tanks built to augment water supply to wild elephants in Dharmapuri DHARMAPURI: The forest department has constructed four new tanks powered by solar-powered borewells to ensure enough supply of water for elephants passing through the forests in Palacode and Dharmapuri. Keeping wild elephants well-hydrated is necessary for their health in the summer season and also to limit their outside forays when thirsty. "These tanks provide about 20,000 litres of water to elephants every day," said forest department staff. In Dharmapuri, the forest ranges of Palacode, Pennagaram and Hogenakkal form a crucial part of the Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest here is the permanent base of 69 elephants and accommodates hundreds of herds of elephants passing through during the annual migration season. "However, severe water shortage in the forest in the summer, forces these elephants to wander into farmlands, causing human-wildlife conflict. To prevent this, we have created four new tanks in addition to the existing 30-odd tanks," the staff added. A press statement by District Forest Officer K Rajangam states, "The summers are extremely harsh in the forests in Dharmapuri; hence protection of wildlife is challenging during this season. One of the key issues is the water shortage. We have constructed four new tanks in the forest area at strategic...

Groups to prevent human-elephant conflict linked to more elephant deaths A long-standing intervention by the Assam government to reduce crop depredation by elephants in its forest regions, piloted and designed by environmental non-government organisation World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is actually associated with more accidental elephant deaths, a study in Conservation Biology has reported. Launched in 2003 in Sonitpur district, the anti-depredation squads (ADS) of Assam coordinated local villagers and the Forest Department to guard their fields and collectively chase elephants away. The squads’ aim was to find safety in numbers for humans while averting direct conflict that could result in elephants being killed by traps or poaching. Versions of this kind of guarding exist across the world. Assam scaled up the ADS’ presence in 2008 and continues to launch new squads even today. They are a part of official national guidelines to deal with human-elephant conflicts and are also present in West Bengal, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. A 2019 review by the Union Environment Ministry, of the various ways in which people can respond to human-elephant conflicts, noted ADS operations were “not systematic” and that “local mobs” firing shots towards elephants reduced their effectiveness. Using data of 20 years of elephant deaths in Sonitpur, mapped alongside the presence of ADSs in...

Wildlife SOS Launches Emergency Rescue to Save Elephant Injured From Years of Forced Labor The elephant was transported to the organization’s elephant hospital using a newly commissioned, state-of-the-art elephant ambulance. — Wildlife SOS, a global wildlife conservation and welfare organization dedicated to providing specialized veterinary care and reducing human-wildlife conflict, launched a critical rescue operation in rural Uttar Pradesh, India, late last month to save a 27-year-old elephant with a severe leg injury after years of forced labor. To transport the elephant named Veer safely, Wildlife SOS deployed its newly commissioned elephant ambulance, marking its inaugural field rescue. The state-of-the-art vehicle features upgraded safety and stabilization systems designed specifically for long-distance elephant transfers. Emergency Treatment and Transport to Elephant Hospital Upon arrival at the scene, the medical team provided immediate care, conducted a thorough examination and treated Veer before he began his journey. Once cleared for transport, the team made frequent stops along the way to allow Veer to lie down and rest, as he was required to remain standing while the ambulance was in motion. His multi-day journey concluded at Wildlife SOS’s Elephant Hospital at the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India. Wildlife SOS is leading the international movement to end the exploitation of elephants forced to work on...

"When an elephant calf is cut off from its herd, the lions charge towards it." 10 animal behaviours filmed for the first time The natural world is full of astonishing spectacles and behaviours – and while we have already unravelled many of its mysteries, there’s no doubt that there are more discoveries to be made. These are the best wildlife documentaries to stream on BBC iPlayer now Sir David Attenborough: 5 magic moments on film One of the ways we can learn more about the animals of this world is to film them in their own, undisturbed habitats. The BBC has become renowned for this, as part of its pioneering natural history programming. This dates to the 1940s, when its natural history content expanded from radio to TV. By 1957, the Natural History Unit was formalised as a hub for wildlife programming. Now, the department is celebrating 20 years since its groundbreaking series Planet Earth. Its epic scale, focus on unusual species and behaviours and cinematic quality made it both a critical and commercial success. Planet Earth’s legacy can be seen in video clips that continuously surprise viewers around the world, as well as the follow-up series Planet Earth II and Planet Earth III. “One of the most memorable moments in British television.” David Attenborough’s most ambitious project celebrated in new TV film...
