Swakopmund and Erongo RED sign housing development agreement Niël Terblanché The Municipality of Swakopmund and Erongo RED have formalised a development agreement to co-fund infrastructure in Extension 32, Kramersdorf. The agreement, signed on Thursday, aims to support the growing demand for serviced residential land in the coastal town. According to the municipality, the development will unlock 70 single residential erven, eight general residential erven, one institutional erf, and two public open spaces. Planned infrastructure includes water and sewerage systems, stormwater drainage, semi-purified water, electricity, telecommunications, and upgraded roads with bitumen surfacing and paved sidewalks. The municipality said that the town council had initially earmarked three Kramersdorf extensions for phased development in 2018, but implementation was delayed due to shifting priorities. In January 2022, the decision was revisited, and Extension 32, the smallest of the planned sites, was selected for development. To accelerate the process, the municipality approached Erongo RED for partnership. While funding discussions were underway, Council advanced planning and design work to ensure the project’s readiness. Under the agreement, Erongo RED will invest N$14 million in the electrical infrastructure, while the municipality will contribute N$50 million for the rest of the development. According to the Municipality, the partnership is intended to fast-track land delivery and respond to the housing needs of Swakopmund’s growing population.

Theft, vandalism threaten water supply at Henties, Swakop Namwater has urged residents of Henties Bay and Swakopmund to use water sparingly following infrastructure damage due to the theft and vandalism of power poles. The Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor (Erongored) infrastructure has been damaged, leading to significantly ompacted power supply to the water utility’s water supply system. The entity in a public notice on Monday said the water available at Henties Bay would only last until Tuesday afternoon. “A severe incident of vandalism and theft occurred on Erongored’s infrastructure, resulting in the cutting and destruction of seven power poles. Erongored has dispatched its technical team to attend to the damage, and repair works are currently underway. It is anticipated that restoration will be completed by late evening of Monday,” the notice said. NamWater urged residents and businesses at Swakopmund to use water only when “absolutely necessary”. It said the Omdel water scheme is offline due to the severe vandalism and theft of Erongored power poles, which has resulted in a complete loss of power supply to the facility. “As a result, no water is currently flowing from Omdel into the system. In addition, the Orano desalination plant is currently offline due to high sulphur levels, meaning no water is being received from this source either,” it added. The entity said no inflow of water is currently reaching Swakopmund and it has engaged the Swakopmund municipality to reduce water supply in response, and further reductions may be implemented to preserve remaining reserves. “We strongly condemn the acts of vandalism and theft that continue to threaten the delivery of essential services. We call on the public to help safeguard our infrastructure and report any suspicious activity. Let us all play our part in protecting these vital resources to ensure smooth and uninterrupted water supply,” NamWater said. Power outages disrupt Walvis Bay Water supply again Niël Terblanché Water supply interruptions in Walvis Bay have continued into this week, with the national utility NamWater confirming a third power outage in the Kuiseb area on Sunday afternoon. In a statement issued on Monday, NamWater’s spokesperson, Lot Ndamanomhata said the latest disruption was due to a broken power cable near High Dune. “Erongo RED isolated the affected section and rerouted power from another substation, restoring electricity to the area at 20:30,” he said. According to Ndamanomhata, once electricity was restored, efforts began to restart the boreholes near High Dune. He, however, added that not all boreholes could be brought back online due to access problems caused by the flowing Kuiseb River. “Our team is closely monitoring the river’s flow and will restart the remaining boreholes as soon as conditions allow,” he said. The latest interruption follows electricity supply issues reported last week after heavy rains caused flooding across all major coastal towns. The downpour affected both the water supply and municipal services, with Walvis Bay experiencing particular difficulties. Ndamanomhata previously confirmed that power failures within the Erongo RED network disrupted NamWater’s capacity to pump water from the Kuiseb River basin, which supplies most of Walvis Bay. “All NamWater’s boreholes are currently without power. The water supply will be limited until electricity is restored,” he said at the time. The disruption has also led to a wider sanitation problem. Residents from areas such as Kuisebmond, Narraville and Lagoon have reported sewage backups and standing pools of wastewater due to longstanding issues with poor drainage infrastructure. The recent rains have only worsened the situation, raising concerns over public health. Ndamanomhata urged Walvis Bay residents to use water sparingly while the utility works to restore full supply. “We are doing all we can to manage the situation, but we ask the public to assist by conserving water,” he said.
