Learn from mistakes. Separate ‘governance’ from ‘board’. There is more flexibility than we think!

What a privilege to have our How We Get to Next panel captured so beautifully by Jessamy Gee of Think in Colour at @acmimuseum.bsky.social's #FACT2026 Symposium last month. 🙏🙏🙏

Three thoughts from ACMI's Future of the Arts, Culture and Technology symposium 2026 The mostly official site of George Dunford where he talks about travel, technology, creative industries, digital, books, arts and other guff.

Really enjoyed #FACT2026 and wrote up three notes on it here. Thanks again @acmimuseum.bsky.social and @sebchan.bsky.social for organising. www.georgedunford.com/2026/02/thre...

By asking, listening and unpicking the ways ‘things have always been done.’ And by learning the right lessons. Grateful for the wisdom and discussions at, around and about #FACT2026 at @acmimuseum.bsky.social this week.

Feeling inspired after the #FACT2026 symposium in Melbourne. One of my favourite events of the year and so well run by the ACMI team. I especially enjoyed seeing Jason Scott’s presentation on the Internet Archive

An apt summary of the #FACT2026 conference!
Thanks to everyone involved for this mindblowing experience!

Huge thanks to Seb and the ACMI team for a superb #FACT2026. I’ll be writing it up for @thepointau.bsky.social in coming days or likely next week. We’ve rocketed through a great deal and we’ve done it together. There is so much good work to be done 🙏

And Sam quite rightly highlights our relative privilege. This isn’t Iran. We shouldn’t have writers festivals and journals who pre-censor. This is not normal. Funding bodies need to be at the centre of that conversation and not part of the problem. Only then can we rebuild. Come on. #FACT2026

Is 'exhaustion' the new norm for cultural workers?? 🤔

#FACT2026

Nick acknowledges the crisis in arts education. A ticking time bomb. Now is the time to change the conversation. Set a long-term agenda for what we want the sector to be. We can do this. #FACT2026

The "save us" mentality just won't cut it anymore!

This was a good (and fiesty!) panel to end the day

#FACT2026

And now it’s time to wrap up #FACT2026. Kate: we need to stop learning the wrong lessons. Learn from those who failed before us. We’re losing more people from the arts than joining. We have no tolerance for what’s unnecessary. Make it better. We’re exhausted. Which is why we need to come together.

ADVOCACY – ESTHER ANATOLITIS Posts about ADVOCACY written by Esther Anatolitis

Here’s a collection of my approach to advocacy, including live case studies and toolkits, across decades of impact: #FACT2026 estheranatolitis.net/category/adv...

Such an important advocacy point Nick is making. The “save us” mentality creates zero political capital from our social capital. We need to be well-connected among the sector, clear and strategic. Look to the sectors whose advocacy succeeds. They’re not constantly asking to be saved. #FACT2026

Nick talks investment, not funding. A “save us” approach never works. I don’t know why it keeps happening. It turns decision-makers off. It’s a deficit and loss mindset. We need to emphasise the multiplier effect. What we unlock. We have massive social capital. We are loved by communities. #FACT2026

Decoding Cultural Leadership Podcast – Samuel Cairnduff Hosted by Sam Cairnduff, the Decoding Cultural Leadership podcast explores intersections between arts, culture & society & what it means to be a cultural leader

How do arts organisations understand their social and cultural responsibility? Here’s the conversation Sam just referenced when I was his podcast guest: samuelcairnduff.com/podcast/ #FACT2026

Let’s also emphasise authentic social participation, says Sam. At a visceral level. Actual people getting involved and what they’re actually doing. We also need a deeper understand who our actual stakeholders are. Developing deep understandings, not ticking a box. #FACT2026

Please stop generating nonsense value statements – integrity, walking, breathing – that don’t actually reflect your purpose! says Sam. Your function and your purpose are not the same thing. Why do you exist? What’s your social and cultural context? Why this, here, now? Take it seriously. #FACT2026
