That's a wrap on 2025's #25DaysofFishmas - the 10th year of #Fishmas silliness! Thanks to everyone who has followed along as we explored some of the amazing fish that call the US home.
From Atlantic to Pacific, there's a lot worth protecting - wishing everyone peace and renewal of hope for 2026.

Thanks for all the informative & fun #Fishmas facts, @drkatfish.bsky.social. Science storytelling at its finest.
Here’s to a new year exploring creeks, lakes & rivers and working to conserve the diversity of freshwater fishes.

An historic illustration of a red and green striped parrotfish.
This is the most festive fish we could find to wish you a very merry #Fishmas from all of us at BHL. 🐟✨ Meet the Lena-Girawah, a spectacular parrotfish from Ceylon described in 1834 as “the most splendid of the class of fishes denominated Parrot”. www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/38892308 #SciArt 🧪
It's that wonderful time of year!
Merry Fishmas everyone!

A repost for #Fishmas... razorfishes, Lembeh. Hanging out in a head-down position like this is... just what they do. Apparently it helps them hide in sea urchin spines, although how that works in open water I have no idea :)

On the 11th day of #Fishmas, the quarry gave to me 11 rays-a-sweeping, 10 #Chimeras sensing, 9 cow sharks feasting, 8 crow sharks chomping, 7 #sphenodus swimming, 6 saber-tooth salmon, 5 mackerel #sharks, 4 flying fish, 3 hammerheads, 2 cardinal fish, and a grumpy lawnmower blenny.
The #25DaysofFishmas calendar with Ghost Shiner on December 23
There’ll be scary ghost stories on Day 23 of #25DaysofFishmas - well, maybe not *that* scary! 👻
Call us Scrooge, because today we're visited by a Ghost of #Fishmas - a small, translucent minnow called the Ghost Shiner (Paranotropis buchanani) - as we continue exploring the Northeast + #GreatLakes

Three moray eels peering out from a hole in a coral reef. They have prominent white eyes with black pupils, dark heads, and their bodies are a lighter brown with yellow speckles #UnderwaterPhotography #Wildlife #WildlifePhotography #Nature #NaturePhotography
There are three of them, so they must be wise men, right? Or spirits? But not stooges. Definitely *not* stooges, okay?

Photo collage of Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, the museum she was curator of, the trawler which brought in the fish, and the mounted coelacanth specimen itself. The text reads "THE COELACANTH December 1938"
MERRY #FISHMAS!
It was on this day in 1938 that Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer made a discovery which would change the world —
the first (non-fossil) coelacanth ever brought to the attention of science

I've been passively following Fishmas for a while... But this is hands down the best #fishmas post I've encountered!

A Dolly Varden fish (left) and a lithograph of the fictional character Dolly Varden on the right
A #Fishmas Carol: Dolly Varden's common name comes from a fictional young girl character in Charles Dickens’s novel “Barnaby Rudge” known for her colorful outfits - and also a popular green fabric with small red polka dots that was marketed under the same name in the 1860s #25DaysofFishmas
Colored pencil drawing of a Dolly Varden trout, it’s got a standard trout body shape with red-orange spots along the midline against a christmas tree green background that becomes more olive green toward the top of the fish. The belly is pinkish gray.
The last #SundayFishSketch #Fishmas is the Dolly Varden trout! I’ve had a lot of fun strategically googling with the hints and this is a gorgeous salmonid
A round yellow fish, its colour fading to white at the tail. It has two black bars on its head over the eye and mouth and thin blue-grey stripes that fade away towards the belly. The rear of the dorsal and anal fins and the tail have black borders and the dorsal and anal fins also have a black band with yellow margins at the base. There is a small red patch at the front of the anal fin. #UnderwaterPhotography #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotofraphy #Wildlife
