#fshverse gale believes that like, powerful mystical beings exist but until he finds one he can’t kill that “Doesn’t Count” as a god. he is incredibly stubborn about this and thinks he is still very cordial and polite abt ppl and their beliefs & then turns around to his best friend
i didn't mention why Teruki was beaten to death. it's revealed via an Echo vision from Seiryu that his soul is Ebisu, a mad auspice "cursed" to live the life of a mortal to atone for his cruelty towards humans. Ebisu cursed Gale when Gale was a child, which led to all sorts of bad stuff.

eventually, Lightwarden Ebisu is slain & Teruki is freed from the torture nexus. his nature as the mortal vessel of a mad auspice prevents his premature death, but he doesn't walk away unscathed. his body on the Source atrophied from its waning connection to a highly corrupted soul.

this is when the Exarch begins Calling the crew to the First, with Teruki being grabbed first based on proximity to Gale, the WoL. Ruki is alone for a year before being attacked by a Lightwarden during a routine outing. he, in turn, becomes the next Warden. Mako of the Ondo is his keeper.

Teruki is killed during the Four Lords trials in post-StB by captain Gale. he is slashed & stabbed with a samurai sword & beaten with bare fists to the point that would kill any mortal person. luckily, Teruki is not mortal.
this event (literally) haunts the crew for years to come.
