Our fifth gen related gaming hot takes:
-Twin-stick controls for 3D games didn’t begin with Halo - they were a thing since Descent on PS1. It started becoming the standard already towards the end of this gen (popularized Ape Escape, RE3, TR3, MML2, etc.). 🧵

Expansions on PC, which continued into the next gen and beyond until they became DLC. Similarly to the modding scenes that also grew bigger during this era, these extended the lifespan of games, often with pretty high quality content. In some cases like SC: Brood War, an expansion became the go to version of the game in online MP. Some other strong examples: WarCraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal (1996), Half-Life: Opposing Force (1999) & Blue Shift (2001), Quake: Mission Packs, Baldur’s Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (1999), SimCity 2000: Urban Renewal Kit (1996), Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith (1998, Dark Forces II), C&C: Tiberian Sun - Firestorm (1999), and MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries (1996, a stand-alone expansion). Expansions for computer games were pioneered in the late '80s (see Xanadu Scenario II, Sorcerian, Laser Squad, Kingdom of Drakkar and Dungeon Master)

Voice acting, while still uneven in quality, starts to become standard in games. MGS, Resident Evil 1-3, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Half-Life, C&C and Red Alert, Wing Commander 3-4, System Shock (arguably in-between gens), Silent Hill, Warcraft II, Tomb Raider series (cutscenes), Fallout 1-2 (cutscenes and key NPCs), Thief, Phantasmagoria, Baldur's Gate, Dino Crisis, System Shock 2 (arguably sixth gen) and Xenogears are some standout examples

During this era, many new genres emerged while existing ones evolved into full 3D. Rhythm games such as Bust a Groove, DDR, and Parappa the Rapper gained popularity, and 3D stealth titles like Metal Gear Solid, Thief, and Tenchu introduced stealth gameplay in a three-dimensional setting. Cinematic or AA FPS experiences—exemplified by Half-Life, Unreal (to a degree), and GoldenEye 007 (to some extent)—set new standards for narrative-driven shooters, while Diablo popularized the ARPG formula despite remaining the standout title in its class. The open world concept advanced with titles like Daggerfall and Outcast, and the GTA-style semi-open world structure was refined in games such as GTA 1–2 and Body Harvest. Trainer RPGs like Pokémon, Digimon, Dragon Quest Monsters, and Monster Rancher also became popular. Survival horror was popularized in its 2.5D/static camera form by Resident Evil 1–3 and Dino Crisis 1–2, following Alone in the Dark’s pioneering work. Fully 3D evolutions of previous genres emerged: rail shooters (Panzer Dragoon 1–2, Star Fox 64, Sin & Punishment), FPS titles (Quake 1–2, Descent, Half-Life, Dark Forces 2, GoldenEye 007), mech/vehicle simulators (MechWarrior 2—with high-resolution support, Wing Commander III, Colony Wars, Armored Core), 3D platformers (Jumping Flash, Mario 64, Spyro, Banjo, Tomb Raider), first-person view RPGs (Daggerfall, King’s Field series) and fighting games (Virtua Fighter 2, Tekken, Soul Blade, Dead or Alive). RTS games soared in popularity with classics like Warcraft II, Command & Conquer (and its Red Alert variant), Starcraft, Dune 2, as well as titles such as Populous 2, SimAnt, and The Settlers. Many of these franchises, including GTA, Panzer Dragoon, Star Fox, Thief, Half-Life, MechWarrior, Armored Core, 3D Mario, Spyro, 3D Zelda, 3D Final Fantasy, 3D Metal Gear, 3D Dragon Quest, 3D Megami Tensei, 3D SaGa, and Diablo, continue into the 2010s.

3D became standardized across several major genres around early-mid 1996, with key titles like Quake, Mario 64, Tomb Raider, and Crash Bandicoot leading the way. Earlier pioneers like Descent, Virtua Fighter 1-2, Ultima Underworld and MechWarrior 2 laid the groundwork in 1995. Many 3D genre standards—Racing, FPS, TPS, Platformers, and ARPGs—were established during this period and later refined rather than fundamentally changed. Resident Evil’s pre-rendered approach evolved from Alone in the Dark, leading to RE4's style, while Silent Hill was the first fully 3D survival horror. JRPGs transitioned to mixed-dimension styles with FF7, eventually going full 3D (e.g., Vagrant Story). However, 2D remained dominant in RTS, WRPGs, Diablo-likes, and handheld gaming (GBC, Neo Geo Pocket, Wonderswan). While 3D took over console gaming, 2D persisted in key PC genres and handhelds.
